Vancouver area clubs/schools

Hello. My family may be moving into the area. My son is a soccer player and needs a challenging school environment and I have a child with a disability. I realize this is a soccer forum, but it is difficult to get information off generic school websites. I am wondering where my very different kids can have a good education and also where my son could try out for a classic team. He is U-11. Are there any clubs/teams with limited politics that may be accepting of a new player? If you don't have anything productive to say please move on to a different thread. I am just a parent looking for informal information. We will likely want to live in Washington and not Oregon. Thanks.

First, welcome to the area. About schools, right now that is completely dependent on the area that you are moving to. My honest opinion is that the education quality is more dependent on the teacher than the school, but that is with my limited experience. I would have said the Evergreen School District for sure a few years ago but they have caused me a few headaches. To be fair, that probably would be the same for other school districts as well. All in all, my daughters have had a good experience and appear to be learning well.

About soccer, Vancouver Timbers or Pacific FC. Not knowing where you came from or how much you know, but VT is now aligned with the Portland Timbers which has some advantages for the boys side (you can read other threads for this) but mostly on the high-level premier side. Other than that, not too sure of the advantages. Pacific seems to have a pretty good, less expensive program but I don't have much information on that.

As far as politics, that likely won't happen. I am involved in a team and the politics is crazy, somehow you have to just accept that some parents on every team are just a little (or a lot) off of the deep end. I just try and avoid them as much as possible. The coaches, in general, in Vancouver at least appear to want the best for the kids. I doubt any team/club/coach will not want to bring on your son if he fits on the talent side.

I am not sure this helped much, but good luck. I appreciate you wanting to do the best for your family and that is admirable. I hope you do get into the clubs here and inject some honest feedback and sense of family as some need a reminder...

I would look into Camas, Wa. Just east of Vancouver, the schools are tops in the State and the community is flourishing. The local soccer club is Washington Soccer Academy. The club has recently merged with VUSA TImbers, becoming the Vancouver Timbers. This year the clubs are operating mostly independently even though the merger is complete. There are politics in every club. And after the merger, it is hard to say, but I imagine some complexities coming. That said, there is a place for your child to play soccer. You should take a look.

As far as challenging schools you may want to look into the Challenge program in the Vancouver School District. In the past it has been offered at more than one school. It is not an after-school program but one that is integrated in the core classes. The District should be able to tell you which schools offer it at the age level of your child.

Most drama and politics are created by the parents. The club and it's directors make decisions based upon the best interests of the club. It's when those changes dont best suit the parent(s) that the perceived issues begin.

Well, first and foremost, congratulations on choosing SW Wa over Oregon. The soccer is stronger and the people are smarter. After that, everything will fall in to place. Good luck to you.
