I would imagine background checks are always conducted before hiring. That stuff costs like $3 an applicant. No way any clubs are hiring people with felonies to coach kids or run their nonprofit clubs. That’s a major lawsuit waiting to happen if so.

It’s the law in Oregon: anyone seeking employment for an entity that caters to minors must go through a background check. Can’t really hire a felon to work in an environment with minors without disclosing the felony to the guardians of the minors. And nobody is dumb enough to go that far and disclose something like that to any of their clientele, so nobody is hiring a felon in that capacity.

Even refs have to go through a mandatory check. Clubs do not skimp on it.
Problems arise when someone just hasn't been caught yet. Sleazy mother f'ers just move from club to club until they do finally get caught. That's where a few phone calls to people you know in the biz can be helpful. Most employers won't tell you more than position, dates and salaries (because of fears of lawsuits), but a friend might tell you so and so is sketchy

Yes, even team managers and all chaperones on all trips must be background checked if your club is following proper procedures. If they aren't, you should look elsewhere.
