    Private Academies on the side?

Why does OYSA allow directors of clubs, which are supposed to be non-profit, run private academies with the same Club players? That's totally unethical. SCA then should be allowed to play at OYSA. It is not different from what these crooks are doing.

Private training academies is what the original poster was referring to. Similar thing happening at OPFC with Alex Hockburn and his PDX football academy. He is in charge of the younger age groups at OPFC. Of course I would probably want my kids training with PDX FA if I wanted to increase the chances of my kid playing at OPFC. The same guy runs both! And after all, we are all only human.

This guy shouldn't be a Director at OPFC running his own little business on the side. Huge conflict of interest.

This was put together by Alex as well as a coach from another team. Cant remember which one but think it is FC Portland. Interesting as my son plays for OPFC and we have never had pressure for him to do the training. I have never been impressed with Alex as a coach so I wouldn't pay extra for him to coach my son for an additional hour per week at any cost. Likewise, I do not blame anyone that is trying to make an honest buck. But he is not a dishonest man who tries to take advantage of people or situations so I hope this thread doesn't go that direction.

Alex not a good coach..if you want run your "for profit" academy but resign from your non-profit position..you deal with the same players and players may indirectly feel pressure to join the private academy with the hope to progress within the Club. That does not seem appropriate. If you are offering a private academy is because you are lacking training at the Club.

Has nothing to do with how dishonest someone is. Your son is ALREADY on OPFC. I would hope you wouldn’t feel pressure to train with Alex to maintain his spot on the team. Plus he just launched his training academy a year ago. But for the younger kids whose families are new to this world, it’s not the actual training they are trying to take advantage of; it’s making sure they are playing the political card and paying the guy who potentially controls their kids’ fate.

This is not dishonest. This is simply textbook conflict of interest. I wouldn’t necessarily call it making an honest buck. He’s not dumb, he knows how to exploit the leverage he has and he knows what he’s doing.

Amen. If you want to run your “for profit” business, you can’t remain employed by a nonprofit when your employment presents a major conflict of interest. That’s all it is. A lot of people would probably take advantage of the situation also, if they were allowed to.

The other guy “coaches” at another club. Alex is one of the “directors” of OPFC and directly responsible for evaluating and placing players on OPFC. Way more conflict of interest with the latter.

I remember this argument. Only last time it was Futry Danso and his private training group having a very good selection rate on the ODP teams. And then there was Brandon and UPDX and ODP. This is not unique, not different. Same as it ever was.

And allowing Alex to run a for-profit training business on the side while directing a component of a nonprofit soccer club is a major conflict of interest.

                        Both things can be true.

No mention of the ADF, a pro-forma non-profit that essentially contracts out ALL THE OPERATIONS OF THEIR CLUB to a (for-profit) LLC run by the club director...

Alex selected 9 players from OPFC for the ODP roster that went to Phoenix this month...
