Does anyone find it disconcerting that our teams are playing age up teams from Canada because Greg Ion wasn't smart enough to tell them they had to play on the right age. Players on each team could be at least 6 months if not a year older. It isn't very difficult to understand. The physical differences alone is enough to make someone wonder.

Its not rocket science, its logical to think its the WRONG thing that is happening.

The goal to win this thing is to go to surf right?????????????? Something that everyone would want to do and a great opportunity for any team in going forward.

- Lets say a Canada team from BU-13 who in this entire country would be classified as BU-14 win the bracket. That year they would have to play.....you guessed it BU-14 at surf.....


Hearing the facts the following should happen.

Just figuring this out now? Brackets were posted 3 months ago. That was the time to complain if you were going to.

Canada uses a January 1 cutoff date for soccer and school years so a BU11 team will be comprised of all 01's instead of a mix of 01's and 02's like in the USA. In theory, each BC team could be an average of 6 months older than a US team. They may be more, may be less; it depends on the birthdates of the actual players on the teams. It is possible that a BU11 team from Oregon could have 15 boys all born in August 2001 and a BU11 team from BC have 15 boys all born in December 2001. Do you have a problem with that? Highly unlikely I realize, but possible.


You have to remember that NWCL makes the rules for this league. The rules state:

Rule 200: Player Registration
Players shall be registered according to the procedures established by US Club Soccer and the Northwest Champions League. Including BC Provincial registration.

So the BC teams comply with the NWCL rules...

Also, remember that all of these teams were invited to play in the league. If you invite somebody you take them as they are, especially when they comply with the rules...

And finally, the main reason why so many BC teams are in NWCL this year is because a lot of WA teams declined their invitations. Instead of getting all worked up over some kids being 6 months older, you should stop to consider why so many top teams don't want to be involved in NWCL anymore...

I think Greg Ion did an admirable job filling in the holes by contacting his old Canadian National team buddies in BC and convincing them to come down and give us some good competition. If they happen to beat everybody then it doesn't matter does it as it all evens out. But if you happen to beat them, you might just be on your way to the semi-finals...

I do think its a shame that he or anyone would make such a poor decision to fill spots.

Its unfortunate for the teams who would have a chance to make it out of group if it weren't for these older teams.

I think if anyone knew going into it the actual age different, people would have made the point that they all go down on age.

One has to think he was deliberately taking advantage of the fact that people may not notice but when these kids show up and the majority are bigger and clearly have more experience, it took notice.

Hopefully they make the right decision and let some of these teams that had to play them, get through.

I have to agree with this post....

Although I think there is an argument here.....especially when teams are forking over almost $1000 to play in this league.
but......

My DD team only lost 3-2 to a canadian team that was much more physically developed than our girls....in our second game we beat the other canadian team 3-0...... both teams were physically over powering compared to our girls...in both games our girls were more technical and that kept us in both games....

Although I agree with some that this is unfair I have to say that if you've joined this league you have joined to recieve the best competition you can to better enhance the development of the players....I haven't seen any Washington teams like Crossfire come on here and bitch about this.

My guess is teh Oregon teams are on here b!tching about this...

You can judge if something is "right" by whether or not you would be proud if it were to be made public. If the NWCL advertised this to be the case, do you think it would fly? First, would they advertise it?

The obvious answers to these are no. The question isn't whether or not the teams are good, who should advance, etc. The point is that the playing field is not the same like every other tournament. I have never seen or heard of a tournament that had an upper limit of age for some teams and not others.

This, my friends, is the problem and not defendable no matter if it was hidden in the rules or not.
