But if it's not a big club or combo then maybe Southside would be 'ripe for the picking' so to speak.
If your suggesting that Nike is the driving force behind any of this you are sorely mistaken.
Barca USA may have chosen to wear Nike (just like the mother club that they are trying to mimick but not affiliated) but Nike is not sponsoring any of this.

I second the "Yawn". Like anyone is going to run to CRUFA? Gimme a break.
Who us CRUFA anyways? Don't think my kids have ever played them. Must be lower division teams? What's the old saying< "you can put Lipstick on a pig" ...

Why not be enchanted or excited for something new to come to Oregon soccer. My educated guess is that this comment is coming from a Timbers parent. I can't think of a reason to be so cynical of something you have no knowledge about.

            IT'S NOT NEW!!!

$10 to the person that can give me the name of the person that helped Spain and Barcelona develop their youth system and the system that is the foundation to their play today.

Hope you're not surprised that there are a couple coaches in OR that are already being trained in the same system and once coach that is working directly with the same guy.

There is more to coaching and training than a Brand name. I can tell you for a fact that the same people that built the barcelona program have ZERO affiliation with this program.

There are many clubs and teams in the hispanic leagues that are called Barcelona or Arsenal. Does that mean I should be excited that they have brought something new to OR soccer?

I'm sorry, as great as this is for CRUFA and Centennial. This does very little for the rest of us. Also, are their coaches are still the same coaches and they have access to the same training materials that most large clubs already have access to.

The only cool thing about this will be the uniforms for the kids!

Good luck, but I'm not sure how great this move will be.

The Barcelona program in CA works so well because of 1) Talent pool and 2) the culture

They're not even the best of what they do down there.

I already said that thing about having the same coaches that are already here, but supposedly the CRUFA/Centennial coaches will have the chance to go to Catalonia to watch trainings and learn from Barca trainings, hopefully they use those opportunities. I think this may draw a few more talented Latino players, maybe 10% more, that could make CRUFA perhaps a Premier level club, (as in, they play in the top division of the OPL,) as opposed the the 1st and 2nd div club they are now.

As a Latino coach, on the west side of PDX, I was hoping this was going to be a club on the west side, or at least more central.

Wow! This should shake things up a bit in Oregon!
Looks like they use fields near 205/I84 (Lasalle, Parkrose, Reynolds, David Douglas)
Could draw out a large Hispanic population, especially if they are affordable.

I agree that the name itself doesn't mean anything overly special. The interesting part is a club fully embracing a club-wide philosophy from top to bottom, which from the announcement it sounds like they are trying to do.

What other clubs around here do that? Could any of the TA club coaches define what it means to play the "Timbers' Way"? Right now we are dependent on the specific coach we get within a club.

I know a fantastic coach at Westside that is on the cutting edge of soccer like this, but he gets little to no support from his club. So if I go to Westside I have to hope I get HIM and no one else, in order to benefit from his personal philosophy.

The opportunities at Barcelona OR might draw more highly qualified (wanting to be even more qualified) coaches to their club. Along with that, there will be players that will want to follow for the same reason. Overall level of the club rises.

All sounds positive to me. We'll have to see how it plays out.

Have you actually looked at the Barcelona program in CA? They are killing Development Academy teams. Had 3 age groups win Surf Cup this year.

Also depends on how you define "best" -- there is a difference between winning and playing the right way. They seem to do both. Go figure.

The exact same thing can be said about the Timbers program.

Maybe. But I would have to think there would be more "local" benefits with a Timbers program for an Oregon Metro team than anything Barca USA can dream up ....

Difference is that the Timbers isn't using the name of a famous club and from across the world and posing to be something that they aren't.

You can call, see, talk to, or e-mail the staff with the Timbers. Whether you like them or not is a different story. Their players come to Timbers Alliance training sessions, their coaching staff are out at practices.

I'm not saying that the Timbers are good. I'm still not sure what they're doing, but I can tell you.... their set-up in OR is VERY different than a phony Barcelona program.

Oh and Timbers is a local program, not a foreign one brought in. Again, very different.

For both programs, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

I love how skeptical people on this board are. Every club/program/DOC/coach has their fans and naysayers. Guess that's why there are several options for people to choose from -- oh wait, options = watered down player pools. It will never be good enough.
