So everyone on here complains about the fact that WST Girls side pays for the boys side scholarships. There is also a complaint that good players are scholarshiped. So it seems like the per player cost (of those paying) should go up, correct?

Why is it that WST is either 1) one of the less expensive classic programs (across the board) for fees or 2) equal to the same as many of the Classic programs on the west side?

Economics would tell you that either the club is making tons of money or the officials of the club are making too much money (for the 5 days/week + weekend games+nights of practice). What the reality is: the club officials are making what they need to give up nights and weekends for the entire year (since most clubs have HS programs also).

Here are the 2012-2013 Fees (if paid in 1 lump sum)
    WST- $1150 + $225 Uniform kit
    SS- $1300 + Uniform ($-?)
    THUSC- $1275 + $225 Uniform
    FC PDX- $1250 + Uniform Kit ($-?)
BSC- $1100+ $185 spring season +$125 Uniform Kit

Now remember that uniform kit $'s go to either Tursi's or Far Post. I am sure each club is given a few kits to help out those that may need it from their sponsor (Nike or Addidas- for the teams on Westside of Portland).

So again to bring it back to my point, If WST is giving way more scholarships and has the same fixed costs (Fields, coaches, gear), shouldn't their fees be the highest?

Your post is great and full of common sense.

Too bad the Yenta's won't hear of any of it.

Just think how MORE affordable WST would be if they didn't have to use so much of their sponsor money on scholarships!

Are you kidding with all of this craziness!

If a child is talented, then they should have the same opportunity to play competetive club soccer-------period! If a club has the means, regardless of who or how, then that is awesome. I wish more clubs were as giving with scholarship help. The kids are the ones that benefit and REALLY----THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS!

I agree with you 110% however the issue at hand is not whether poor kids deserve to play but the FACT that the girls program @ WST is sub par and exists only to support the boys!

First off wst just won state U18, 3-0 over Rush. And u14 girls won both OPL and OYSA. Not bad for not having a program.
Second stop paying attention to the parents who harp on the boys side that wst has so many scholarship kids. They are upset because their little Johnny keep getting cut by the likes of Enrique, Ricardo, Manual, & Rodriguez!

The scholarships are exactly why WST doesn't have much left after everything is said and done. It's also the reason why they are trying to get more girls to the program and give them all ONE coach. Less time and money spent on the girls yet they pay the same (and typically more since they get less scholarships)

I was at WST tryouts and my daughter just changed club to play on their u11 team. All the parents were introduced to the coaching staff. The U12 girls A team have 3 coaches, u11 girls A team have 3 coaches, u11 B team have 2 coaches (neither one being Cory), U10 have 3 coaches.

When the coach opened it up for questions, somebody, who obviously reads this forum, asked about how he will coach five teams. He laughed and asked us, "does it look like I'm really coaching 5 teams?" He is coaching the u12 and u11s with assistants that have coached as head coaches at other clubs (2 of the coaches haven't been published on the website yet) and then a volunteer assistant (younger and newer coaches) for each team.

That makes 9 coaches for 4 teams. That doesn't sound like they're skimping on coaches to me. Just proves that they stink at marketing and communicating all the new changes.

My daughters WST team had two scholarship players last year...never thought to check under their shorts to see if they were really boys.

I find this horrible that all these WST parents know who is on scholarship.

                          Typical WSM bait and switch.

They don't... it is just some racist piece of crap that wants to stir the pot. Don't fall for it.

It does not matter if the asst coach steps in. The Head Coach should always be there.

Who ever said anything about the coach not being there? There's more coaches they added? I guess we will all wait and see how it goes.
