    State Cup Results

If you are an older girl, U15-18, it looks like FC Portland or OSSA are the two clubs you should look to play for. Both clubs have three of possible four teams in the finals, six of the possible eight finalists are from these two clubs. My daughter is currently a U11 at another club but we are seriously considering moving her to either FC Portland or one of the OSSA feeder teams. Good to get in early at one of these two clubs I suppose.

FC is a great club and has good teams on the boys and girls side. The problem with your analogy is that kids change clubs so much between U11 and U15 that it's tough to tell which one develops the best. And it changes every year. Last year FC only had 2 teams in the final and THUSC had 5 teams in the finals. This year THUSC has 3 but had 5 teams in the semi-finals. Judging off one year doesn't help. Find the right coach and club philosophy and you'll be fine. Don't think you could go wrong with FC or THUSC at the younger ages and FC, THUSC, or OSSA U15 and above.

I agree with this post. It is hard to tell with alot of movement who is developing.

What I do see though is FC seems to be more balanced with 14 out of 16 teams in the semi final. (boys and girls)

Looks like OSSA boys did well too, two in the finals

Operate off of one year and I think you're misguided. Look at all the factors, not just one year of moderate success, particularly taking into consideration gender, coaching, and potential teammates (ask around). Do you really want your child being miserable but playing on a good/great team? His/her soccer career will be prematurely cut short.

Nobody said anything about being on a team and miserable. That is a strange thing to say.

Go where you think the overall coaching is best and where you get along best with the players and parents.

I am not a fan of following a club that is "winning" or a particular coach.

Stick around and be part of building a "winning" program at your own club.

If you like the kids and the coaches at your club, I would stay put rather then moving to a club simply because they have a "winning" program.

It's a situation I have seen and is not intended to respond to your particular situation. Obviously, I don't know your situation. At least a dozen kids immediately come to mind where the kids continually moved clubs and teams notwithstanding the kids being very happy with their particular situation. I fault the parents for pushing the kids to change based on what they perceived to be the "best" at any given time.

Last year FC was very average; this year they did well. OSSA, THUSC, others have been up and down as well. None of them are trending up or down. Let's go back to the original poster - the parent has a U11G and comments that "If you are an older girl, U15-18, it looks like FC Portland or OSSA are the two clubs you should look to play for." Really? A few weeks ago and the club you'd be looking to play for would be THUSC based on last year. Did their girls program all of a sudden become second rate because of a few close losses.

For Christ's sake, don't make your decision with your younger kids based on one year.

FC Ptd, OSSA feeder club or THUSC are all good clubs.

If your girl is good enough to make it on the A team for FC Ptd or THUSC, I doubt they can go wrong when it comes to development.

It is when a girl is looking at a B team or a division 1 team that I think the decision becomes a little more difficult as there are bad situations kids could end up in, IMO. At that stage coaches and the girls on the team are more important than the club you pick . . . again, IMO.

I did not write that FC and THUSC are the teams to play for however,
I hardly think FC has had ONLY one year of success...Sure they have ups and downs but overall this is a successful club. However, I would never advocate a kid be miserable to stay on a winning team. That's just silly and life is too short.

You seem to be wanting to create an issue where none exists Quit being so damn defensive. Again, go back to the original comment. A parent with a young girl is looking to the future. The comment was that the decision to go with OSSA or FC was based SPECIFICALLY on their successes this year. In MY opinion, that is a very short sighted and misguided approach.

If you go with history, I am talking more than just the past 3 years then on the girls side it is definitely FC Portland and LOSC/OSSA. Even the past 3 years both of these clubs have been very good at the older age groups. These have been the top two clubs at the older age groups for the past 10 years, some others have had teams here and there but the two clubs have shown consistency in winning and placing kids in college. Will THUSC, ESU, WSM etc get there, maybe but for now these two clubs have been the best and it looks like they were again this year if State Cup is your measuring stick.

We are not THUSC but I don't see how anyone could dismiss the club as being a very good one for girls. My DD is 16 and ever since she was U11 THUSC has been a very good club with alot of success.

They (Thusc) are OK at certain age groups, girls only, and only if you are on their 'A' team. Their 'B' teams are grave yards.

State cup is only a few games where teams get lucky, it a barometer but just one tool, look into histories, check season results, check out the coaching, other parents, etc. Truth is, if your son or daughter is good, there is always a spot at a good club at an older age bracket. At younger ages their are multiple good programs getting it done. it's a marathon, not a sprint. Make sure your kid is happy, then you can worry about the rest.

I don't have a daughter at THUSC but I can tell you they have been much better than "ok" at certain age groups. We just played State Cup and my dd's team is moving up from division 1 to premier next fall. The THUSC 'B' team just beat us. It was an eye opener for us.

I do like how you managed to slam THUSC in your post and then go onto not using winning as a deciding point.
