Like they try to perform poorly during the season? Most parents think any call against their team is a bad call.

At least be on time to the game. That seems like a reasonable request.

remember these guys don't do this for a living...as you can tell...

there are only two types of referees out there....

        Ones that are bad
and ones that are f---ing terrible!

You just have to pray that you get the bad one.

One more request: be consistent in your calls.

If the ball gets kicked into someones hand and you call that handling, then please call it the same way the rest of the game. I'm fine if you call it handling or not, just be consistent.

On offsides, if you are going to incorrectly call it based upon the ball postition and not when it is played, at least be consistent.

If you are going to be hesitant to call fouls in the box on one team, then call it the same way for the other team.

Since you don't seem to have kids involved in OR youth soccer what are you doing stalking this site?

Yeah, because paying money to someone who wants to earn a little extra cash on the side is something we should be ashamed of. Brilliant.

I take it there were some issues in the first weekend of games?

                    Horror stories?

Victims of referees are usually bad teams and bad players to begin with. Referees rarely cost a team a goal; let alone a game. It happens, but a team can usually prevent it by making better plays before a bad call. Keep in mind that the referees don't care who wins the game, so they are not cheating a team. Do bad calls happen? Of course. Your idea of consistency is fine. The thing is, referees are most certainly doing these things in their own mind. Do you honestly think these good people go into a game with the idea of screwing one of the teams?

By the way, the ball being kicked into someone's hand is just one small fraction of what should be considered when making a handling decision... Curious, what do you mean by calling offside based on ball position? I've never heard this before.

                        Send in the video

The OPL and the referee association always tell us that they are trying to improve the officiating so what better way to do that than send them a copy of the games they call this weekend.

Send OPL the DVD along with a note telling them where to find any issues you have so that they can go over it with the officials involved. Whether they do it or not is not really the point. The point is that they have the opportunity to put their actions where their mouth is!

Plus if the ref's actually take the time to review the tape they may actually learn something!

On the other hand you might get a reply explaining the call and YOU might learn something!

A bit of a mixed bag. Some people reported good reffing, others said there were some issues. Of course parents aren't always the most objective on these things so take all of that with a grain. As above, consistency is really the key. And not just consistency in what calls are made, but that he calls the game the same in the second half as he does in the first half. I've seen games where it was plenty rough in the first half with no fouls called. Then the second half, everything is a foul. I hate games that are reffed like that. It really confuses he players too.

Agreed to a certain extent, but referees make halftime adjustments too. You would have to be a fool to continue down a road that is causing you nothing but turmoil. It is GOOD refereeing to debrief at halftime and adjust to make for a better game. Also, a ref might make a questionalbe call early in a game to establish control in a game. That same questionable play may be allowed later if players have been playing within the guidelines set by the referee. So, the game changes and the calls change based on the situation (time, location, score), and sophisticated players understand this especially if the referee is using his/her best tool - communication.
