    Congrats!

To Sarah Small, Sisters HS keeper and pole vaulter. Full ride to Wake Forest. Class 4A to a D1 final four team across the country. Pretty good lesson. If you're good, they will find you, but it takes lots and lots of work and patience and support and yes, a bit of luck.

    Good luck, Sarah!

Congrats about the ride, but more importantly a great school with a rich academic tradition

I just read it the linked article, the player mentioned is not listed in the Wake Forest recruiting class in terms of National letters of Intent. The article is a couple of months old, so it is possible that the player mentioned here is going to play at Wake Forest next year.

But remember that whenever you hear someone claiming a full ride, as everyone does when they hear about a kid getting a scholarship, it is probably not true. Far likelier is that the player received a partial scholarship. Wake probably carries 25 to 28 players. They are limited to 12 scholarships per year. Only the top players nationally get full rides most get closer to 1/3 to 1/2, if anything. Many players even in D1 schools with good teams get 1 to 2000 per year.

In other words, be very skeptical of claims like this. It doesn't happen very much. If the player actually got any scholarship money to play at Wake or is even going to play there, she must be very good and should be congratulated, even w/out a full ride.

Congratulations to the young lady. Until she signs her NLI, nothing is guaranteed. That is, the first Wednesday in February her senior year. For now, its a coach-player verbal commitment. It must be for next year as she is not listed as this fall's recruit. The scholarships are limited to 14 per year, not 12. Exceptionally few get a full ride, but with good academic grades and SAT's, she'll be fine. Remember, players get more of a scholarship, usually defined as a percentage of the Cost of Attendance, (COA), as they become more valuable to the team. Starting, playing long minutes, etc. gets you more. Freshman usually get the least, seniors the most.

This player is a senior this year, so was eligible to sign a NLI anytime after February 1st. There is still nothing on the Wake Forest web site, or anywhere else that I can find, to verify that she will be playing there. Is there a link out there that someone can share to confirm this. And yes, this kid is a very solid player and best of luck to her wherever she ends up after high school.

She is a senior. The commitment only came in the last couple weeks, so it would not be with the Feb. article someone referenced. She also is the defending state champ pole vaulter in 4A, and has the best vault this year for all classes. She will be doing both soccer and track, at least the first year, which should answer some of your questions about scholarship.

                  It's real simple

If the young lady signs an NLI with Wake Forest in Soccer it will be reflected on their website. Furthermore if she signs an NLI for Track and Field with the Deacons it will be reflected on their website. It's great that she is intending on going to Wake Forest, outstanding school how much athletic scholarship she is awarded from either or both the Track and Field or the the Soccer program is a matter between herself and the school. Rest assured if she gets even a sliver of athletic aid from either it will be publicized by Wake Forest.

Please call Wake Forest if you're so desperate for immediate info. Not sure what your motive is.

Good for her to be great at two sports. That's not easy to do. You can be great in multiple sports in high school, but for a university to think you are good enough to participate in both in college, well that is impressive. She will not have much free time as college athletics are quite demanding and clearly the academics are too. I have a daughter who projects well for college athletics but I am hoping that if it comes to bear, it is at a school closer so that I can watch her play. Wake would be too far away for my taste.

What's wrong with this girl? How crazy do you have to be to be a goalie? Not only that but to fling yourself high enough in the air TO KILL YOURSELF on a spaghetti thin pole? Man, that's just nuts.

Congrats and respect. Nothing like working hard and seeing it pay off.
