Selecting the right coach for your child

    http://universalsocceracademy.com/home/616162.html

This article discusses the importance of finding the right coach for your child. This is challenging to say the least. How do I find that diamond in the rough?? It's also challenging to get my child to change to a team that isn't winning. So far in my brief experience with soccer we have had one coach that seems to have taught my child anything special. But at the end of the day the coach was still more concerned about winning (u10). So now we move to finding a coach for classic soccer in the formative years. I prefer not to make the mistake of selecting the wrong coach. Most of the clubs haven't posted the coaches so this process will be harder because of that. Any thoughts?

    Only productive posts please.

FC Portland has posted their coaches. Based on your post, your child is a U11. If your child is a boy their is another stream that talks about Mike Gavin. It seams positive. If your child is a girl, it will be Mike dePinna. He is the club DOC and does a good job developing players.

Talk to the coach if you can. Find out his/her philosophy. Are they going to push your child to improve their fitness, technique, tactical awareness and decision-making abilities? Are they going to find roles for your child where they can have success yet be pushed to learn new things at the same time? Coaches that do this almost invariably also have winning teams.

If the coach is only interested in kick ball then they may win games if they have enough "natural" talents but the kids won't get better and the team will eventually stop winning.
