Referees call the game too soft

I think that referee's are doing a disservice to our kids by calling the game too soft here in the PDX area.

Soccer, especially in the US is very physical. We go up to Seattle area and get waxed in this department not because the kids aren't capable of being physical but because they aren't allowed to play physical.

It's even worse when we go down to So Cal....how do we get referee's to be more consistant with regards to allowing the flow of play be more physical?

By the time your player gets to college they will find out about being physical. And guess what: It's not the BS that many youth soccer parents think is physical. Gratuitous pushing, shoving, grabbing, pulling, body blocking is American football, not soccer. Go to a college soccer game, PAC-12, and see soccer. The local referees are doing a good job of keeping youth soccer playing soccer. Some distant tournaments are too physical at the expense of the game. The Tacoma showcase event is a classic "we don't know how to play but we certainly can foul you" example. Don't worry, your player will be physical in the future.

Just to be clear - we have now gotten to the point where we're complaining our ref's are too good?

No, we are complaining that they are too tall. Next week it will be that they blow the whistle too loudly.

There should be more blonde referees. I wouldn't be complaining then

Referees are instructed to call games differently at different age groups. Allowing for game flow and advantage at u12 doesn't make a ton of sense all of the time. As players skills improve and their ability to play through contact improves referees should be allowing more - not calling every "by the book" foul. Good referees often get bashed for 'late calls.' Actually they're waiting to see if play can or should continue - if the player can take the contact and keep the game going. When they can't, late whistle, lots of parents shouting, and free kick. That's the why it is supposed to work; only the parents don't get it in many cases especially with the youngers.

Refs always look for the advantage before making calls. The exception is play that could cause injury to a player. That might be a trip by a U12, a slide tackle front the back at U14, to a undercut on a player in the air at U16. Parents need lessons, maybe the clubs could provide?

                Its A Contact Sport

I have to say that coming from England and being involved both in playing coaching and refereeing there you are so right that refs are too soft, but some of that has to be laid at the feet off parents. So many of them dont really understand the game that is played outside the borders of their own country.

Football as it is called around the world is a contact sport the sliding tackle is one of the most beautiful things in the game along with scoring the perfect goal. Defenders practice this all over the planet yet our refs call fouls because some lack luster Lucy or falling Freddie ends up on her or his butt due to the tackle. People please wake up and realize this is part of the game its not basket ball and although their are similar accepts to the both games this one has contact which is very acceptable around the globe. until we wake up and see that we will be behind just like the donkeys tail!!!!

My daughter has played recently in South America and Europe. Her American team was constantly told how much more physical they were than the competition and warned to take it down. Spectators felt so, too. Most American slide tackles are late and rarely get close to the ball. That's why fouls are called. You are simply misinformed and disingenuous.

no not misinformed it just shows how you dont know how to slide tackle we practice this all the time in the Uk and get it right but because you guys dont when you do play that way youre always late and implement it at the wrong time. Its down to bad coaching and bad referring your players dont know when to and when not to use this tool in your defenders armour

Slide tackle proficiency is never the fault of referees. How could you possibly think it is? Perhaps you could go back to the UK and your soccer club as clearly you never bothered with regular school. Perhaps the ref made you too small and too slow?
