    Referees

I encourage you all to go to the OPL website and read the week 5 report, paying particular attention to the "Testimony of a Young Referee".

You can follow the link below, or select "Training and Continuing Education" in the referee section on the bottom left.

    http://www.oregonpremierleague.com/r...g/index_E.html

In case you weren't aware of these reports, read through some of the others. I am glad to see these are made public by Unified Soccer Solutions and have been reading them all season.

Interesting, nearly 50 views in a short time period and not one reply. Did this hit home with some of the over-the-top/zealous parents who seem to be some of the frequent posters? Or, maybe the views were from some of the moderately inclined parents that lurk but have been rightfully cautious in posting views that would just get flamed from the above?

I read the report, and it is a sad testimony of which I too often see repeated each weekend by parents behavior.

Thanks for the link to the original poster.

Or maybe no one followed the link and actually read the story so they didn't comment. While I find it sad that the parents were yelling that much at a U10 game it seems as if that girl had no right to ref the game and the actual center ref let her down. That's the problem when you have kids reffing games that aren't ready for that responsibility.

        That is the problem

The ref had no adult to back her up, come on, what about the ref assignor. Did they just jam out after the came?

Oh an other point. So the center didn't show, that means there were only two refs. How about the assignor jump in, pick up a flag and run a side line

This is what happens when someone charges for professional services and provides low quality.

What is the organization doing right now to improve itself, right now?

She wrote the person assigned to be the center was tired. It sounds like what happened were a bunch of out of control adults with a complete loss of perspective. It was U-10. If you read the posts you can see what the organization is doing to improve itself. Better question is what did the club do when it got that report about its coach and team?

Ref have to get thicker skin

Come on. If your going to ref and get paid you might get yelled out. People are paying thousands of dollars for their U-10 chlid to win, be the best etc. Refs, well your going to get yelled at when they loose.

Youth soccer is an industry, hundreds of thousands of dollars flow throw Oregon Soccer each year. Parents are investors, and when things don't go right they are going to yell at the refs and find a new club.

            There is your reality check

The problem as I see it lies not with the officials, but with the club. For most parents of u10, u11 & some u12 players this is the first competitive sport their son/daughter has played, they cut a big check and expect immediate results, so of course they are going to go psycho on the field. They know very little if anything about the game except they want to win.
The club needs to prepare the parents on how to act properly on the sidelines in order to give their child the best experience possible. The coaches should know better out of the gate.

U-10 league games don't mean CRAP. No league stats or records are kept and this is done because it's development - Thus the name "Player Development League". They want to stress development of the players OVER the win loss records and stats. Odds are the parents going nuts on the side line are "first time troughs’" and haven't figured this out yet - don't realize it. I see this as the coach's problem to handle. Draw a line and if it's crossed then they should deal with it but some coaches feel their responsibility is to only in training the kids when in many cases that needs to extend to the parents as well.

PDL should stand for Parents Development League. They should take a hard stance against parental influence and begin a refreshing new wave of parents enjoying the beautiful game of soccer.

Unfortunatly, disagreement with refs happens all the way to the elitest levels, by fans. You wont ever get away from it, but through education, may decrease it!

As if. It would be nice, but when there are threads on this message board titled "U13 smack/power ranking," I doubt anyone is going to readjust their perspective any time soon. Which is too bad, as some of these over-the-top parents are going to be devastated when their kids lose interest in soccer and decide to quit to do something different.

This is why both my high school aged kids will not officiate a game below u13. There is a reason no one wants to cover these games. Most of the parents seem to grow up by u13 but there are always exceptions.

Maybe this would be where the league could step in with a coaches meeting at the start of the season. DOC's & HC's come in and they go over sideline expectations. Require it or their team is bounced out of the league. - just a thought..

I hope this is a joke because otherwise it's pathetic. It's a youth referee in a U-10 game. Most of the kids playing aren't very good and never will be good. At U-10 they are certainly not better than the referee. Paying money doesn't give you or anyone else the right to misbehave and yell at referees and coaches in youth sports. It simply doesn't. Employees get paid, how long would you last (unless you're the owner) if you berated an employee, in public, for a mistake? You wouldn't last long working for me and I am an owner. Someone who gets that whipped up about a U-10 game needs counseling or should simply stay away. It's for the kids--not the adults. What should concern you and others who think that way is acting like a jerk and treating people poorly in front of kids can last a lifetime. Hopefully it won't create a second generation of bad actors. Time to grow up.

There seems to be a lot of cards given out each week. My Daughter is a U14 and I have rarely seen cards given. What age group and is it boys or girls who are getting all of these cards?

Red cards and coach dismissels a sign of bad ref

As with all human communication there are two sides to the story. The rules of the game give the Referee unlimited power over a game all too often this power is abused. Sometimes this abuse is a result of their immaturity other times it is a reflection of their laziness.

An experienced official rarely loses control of the game or cannot diffuse a boisterous sideline or bench.

The rash of cards and dismissals is a reflection of both the associations attempt to crack down on what they see as disrespectful behavior and the referees thin skin.

I laugh from my belly when I hear the soccer faithful blame the parents when you can go to any other youth sport and experience the same level of disapproval expressed from the sideline and yet you don't see ejections to the degree we do in soccer. What you also don't see in those other sports at the higher levels are young and inexperienced officials calling games.

Until soccer realizes it has a problem attracting ADULTS to the profession this conversation will be on a continuous loop!
