Is it really ok to not allow HS players to participate in Homecoming Parade?

Is it really ok for a coach to not allow the players to participate in their school's homecoming parade and activities? You will be benched for the last game if you go and miss practice?

    I don't think it's right!!

It shouldn't be a big deal if it is just practice but I see it differently if it was a game or tournament. When a player makes a commitment to a team they should honor that commitment, especially if they are starters. Club soccer is a huge commitment but players and parents now a days put club sports second to HS and it is so frustrating for those of us that know the difference. If HS sports mean more to players than they should never sign up for Club. It really is a no brainer, if you are a decent player, club comes before HS. If you are mediocre and do not get to play too much than HS sports are your better options. Stop ruining it for all the serious players in club when you do not show up for a game/tournament because your HS coach threatens to not play you if you choose club or you have dance...show your dance moves on the pitch!

Our school canceled practice the night of homecoming on purpose.

Most hs have rules, miss a practice and you sit out the next game. Poor planning on the school's part to have a parade on the day of any hs team practices....or poor planning on the hs team coach's part, whichever....

But bottom line, a rule is a rule, and I know our coach has wanted to bend it numerous times for things, case by case, but the school makes sure rules are upheld, no matter the sport, player, etc.

I'd ask the coach to move practice to another day. If she/he won't, decide what means more to you...walking down the street in a parade, or playing in your last game of the regular season. It's a choice.

                Fair

I think it is fair. Coaches have to be there - away from family and friends - and players should too. If Homecoming is more important than the commitment to the team for that player then by all means sacrifice the starting spot. Coaches shouldn't be put on the spot to evaluate the legitimacy of excuses. Anything short of school work or an injury or a family emergency should cost the player imo.

                I'm a guy with a boy, so maybe I don't get it??

Yes you don't get it. What would you say if your DS was home coming King?

This is High School for Christ’s sake. In general there are not scholarships on the line and if the coach does not have enough common sense to be able to reschedule practice for EVERYBODY then they should reconsider their profession

Agreed. It's only HS soccer, not like it's club ball. HS is suppose to be fun and for the enjoyment of the HS experience. Let the kids get all the experiences they can.

So was your daughter homecoming queen?

Why come here and whine and complain? Why not just skip practice and deal with the consequences? If marching down the road in a parade is that important, it should be worth missing training.

Or take it up with your school. Why here where no one can do a darn thing to help ya?!
