How can you tell if your HS coach can coach?

It seems that many of the HS teams that are successful here in ORegon are winning becasue they get pretrained kids from clubs.

So how do you know if your childs coach is any good or just collecting a check?

      high school coaches

A believe the answer is self-evident, high school coaches aren't good. Well, the couple of dozen I know on the girl's side anyway. A few on the boys side seem good, but I don't know them as well.

Now, for a realistic answer; a high school coach is like any other coach. It follows for high school, club and college. Questions may be asked.

      - Does the team play as a team and seem to be cohesive and motivated?
      - Do they consistently play at as high a level as it appears they are capable, or do
they just play to the competition?
      - Do substitutions and substitution patterns make game sense, or is the coach just
trying to give time to players?
      - Are the players the same, better, or worse than they are in club play, for example.
      - Does the coach allow "prima donnas" to exist and play?
      - How about offensive and defensive formations and schemes?
      - Are the players in good fitness levels and are they held accountable for fitness?
      - Do the players enjoy the team or endure it?

      Some thoughts to consider.

Your post says it all. You would have no idea if a good coach came and kicked you up the ass (which is what you need) What a ridiculous post. I hope people ignore it. This is a post from another trouble starter. The post would be hotting up with rumors and with slander and then BAMM!!! You will write what you really want to write.

The point was to find out what we should expect from a HS coach. Should they have development capabilities or should they just be tactical? I see very little "coaching" going on and want to know if that is all we should expect or are the schools teams populated by club team member’s content to have place holders?

it all depends, you can't generalize here. There are very good coaches in the Metro (Jesuit, Sunset, Westview), which I'm familiar with, and I'm sure there are good coaches elsewhere. A few are club coaches as well with prominent clubs. If you feel your HS coach is not up to par be thankful the season is short. It is what it is.

I think that would depend on the player and the goals. Every school, coacha and year are different. Really, what's important is to get involved and help support your team and school in any way you can. Every coach has different strengths, and it is a great life skill to learn to work with different people and styles. Try to be postive - it works both ways!

The other thing that I see is that the players (at the youngest age --- i.e. Freshman) get to play with the older (seniors). Something they may not every have had the opportunity to do so before(+/- 4 years). It's that bonding that takes place, the age difference diminishes both on and off the field.
