Good evaluation

Organization - excellent
Scheduling/timing/reporting - excellent
Quality of fields - excellent, except one at a elementary school, which was OK. The location of most of the finals and the headquarters was great. For early Aug. (or otherwise, for that matter), great conditions.
Weather - as good as you're going to find. Yes, bring the sunscreen.
Parking - $10 for the three days. Public facilities. OK.
Quality of play - Fair to good. Would be nice to have more higher level teams. Nice variety. Better and more diverse than last year.
Refs - good. Understand most are from outside the area.
Hotel availability - tight. Last minute reservations were tough. Found room at Eagle Crest near Redmond. Some stayed south in Sunriver.
All in all, one of the better tourneys our team has been to in the Pac. NW. Great potential for a new tourney.

Excellent, agree 100% with your assessment. Our team has gone both years and this year was much improved in terms of competition. Tournament Director was on top of things, staff was friendly, everything was organized and ran on time. If this trend continues then next year this will be a very tough event in terms of competition, as I think most teams would return. It is not as big as Mt Hood, but most games were at 2 big complexes, and all the fields were within 10 minutes of each other, so it was very easy to get around. Looking around, I saw tons of competitive games, and some good teams in attendance. Most brackets had the usually number of blow outs, but most games were very close. It was great to play teams we don't usually see at PDX events, and I think its a shame most Portland clubs don't send teams here, . Adding a few of the bigger name Portland clubs will only help this event grow and attract teams from No Cal, Bosie, etc. (Funny, I saw Mustang U18 Boys team, didn't they have their own tournament this weekend) This could be a great event for years to come, and we will definitely go back!

I am glad to hear the Bend tourney is improving. Our Club has considered going there as the area has a lot to offer other than just soccer. I am not sure if they are doing so but they may want to package in some rooms at the Resorts in the area or maybe even some of the camp grounds.

A reason some of the top Teams in the Portland area are not going at this point is the fact that a lot of them have California tournaments in this general time frame. There are only so many teams for a lot of tournaments.

I wish the Bend folks well as it sounds like things are getting better every year.

We attended this tournament for the first time this year and I have to agree that it was pretty good for what it was. The organization was top notch and the venues were great. If the lodging thing could be figured out I can totally see out of state teams traveling to Central Oregon for a tournament in a beautiful location with many things for families to do... ie mini vacation. We actually ended up camping at a KOA and there were several teams staying there. It would be nice to attract more Portland area teams but it was still fun.

I was glad to see that Eugene had so many teams in attendance. Overall I give it an "A" which I can honestly say I haven't given any Oregon tournament since the demise of the old school Chinook Cup.

Dates for Bend

Last year (first year) it was mid-July. Almost double the teams this year. We did a CA tourney this same weekend last year and there were Portland teams there. Not sure there is perfect weekend. Looking at the tourney calendar, this weekend appears to have less conflicts than most.

Right you are (re: last year's timing). I suspect they try to avoid conflict with other tourneys, but they also have to deal with a tremendous number of other events on summer weekends. Lodging gets to be a big problem there sometimes.

In addition the weekend prior was the US club Nationals in Boise. It would be a difficult trip unless they passed through on the way home

Do many of the former Chinook Cup teams do the Mount Hood Challenge?

Do any teams at U15 and above do this one, or are they not allowed to since it is hs season?

Someone said they had an older age bracket there, but I thought Oregon U15+ teams don't see one another til November? Rules or something?

My daughter is newly u13, and we aren't doing any other tournies this summer, sadly.

Not really an event that competes with Surf Cup, where maybe 1-2 teams from OR or WA would make this trip and are good enough at this young an age. For the other 99% of teams, this is a great event and a really fun way to end the summer, a nice team bonding trip to Bend. We went last year, we will be going again for sure. Very nice fields, well organized and well run, different teams then we usually play against all summer, and 12 micro breweries, what else do you need!

The post said it was a great follow up to Surf Cup. Think the person was just pointing out that for some teams it's at the same time as Surf Cup. For the older teams, I doubt that after going to Surf Cup they'd want to rush back to attend the Bend tournament.
