    Soccer in Salem????

We moved here from the East last summer. Back East, a healthy soccer club fields at least one team per age group and many age groups have two teams, a gold team and a silver team. Having a silver team is great for players for want to play competitive soccer, but aren't on the olympic soccer and scholarship track. Both CFC and KSC can't even field full rosters of teams. What is wrong with soccer in Salem?

Welcome to Oregon. If you havn't noticed we seem to seek polarization in any aspect of soccer.

A serious answer to your question. Salem as a community has a very diverse demographic. Nearly 20% of the population is under the age of 18. This should be good, it should mean lots of players. Perhaps primarily because if expense many players play in more itinerant leagues (4-H for example). In reality there are 4 or 5 "clubs" serving this market. This is compounded by the political animosity between the two largest clubs. Salem has seen some very talented boys teams, and has the makings of some strong girls teams, the parents just have to get over themselves. Salem is a work in progress. My recommendation to any parent is focus at the team level, find a team and coach that are a good fit, and I would say stir clear of the political stuff as much as you can, because it is and from any side.

There are plenty of younger groups in Salem, but for whatever reason a majority of the girls in the now U16 age group chose to quit playing soccer once they reached U15 (as do many kids) and so the team with Keizer/United SA disbanded. It is strange to me also that Salem hasn't been able to keep a competitive team together at that age group.

That said, there's plenty to choose from in Portland. I know of several clubs at U16 in Portland that have at least one Salem girl driving up- THUSC and OSSA for sure. Perhaps carpool?

Club soccer for HS ages is often difficult. Kids social focus has turned to the high school, and typically it is strong teams only that smoothly make the transition. This is not just Salem, if you look at the recent consolidation of Southside and Lo's high school Programs to form OSSA. This becomes a tough age group. Have you settled in enough at her high school to know where her friends play? Most clubs have two tryout windows, first in August, second in November with play starting in January. She could even play for the fall season with her high school, and find out where her friends play. That would probably be more valuable than any anonymous recommendation you will find here.

She should play for CFC, they have the best girl teams in Oregon and have the best coaches in the nation.

It's amazing how some people can't resist reverting to immaturity. I knew it was a matter of time when this thread was started.
