    Odp

My daughter is a '00 and I was thinking of having her try out this year. Has the cost gone up again or is this normal?

"Below is a rough cost breakdown of what ODP will cost in 2011/12. Please know we do everything in our power to
help players get through. We offer scholarship money, we offer fundraising programs, we offer payment plans and we
do what we can to help players with financial difficulty get through. We never want money to affect a players
participation. ODP Regional Championships (if selected)-$850 (rough estimate), ODP Regional Camp (if selected)-
$725 (rough estimate), MLS Friendly Weekend-$195 (rough estimate), Oregon ODP Friendship Cup-$50 a player (if
selected). State fee is around $330."

seems to be the new norm

The costs are higher now because of the OYSA-OPL split. Although Eric (sp?) is now an employee of the Timbers, high overhead seems to prevail. People like to say that OYSA used to subsidize ODP, but ODP loss was always due to applied overhead. Last OYSA report I saw had that applied overhead at approximately $86,000. That's a direct result of OYSA having way too many staff for the size of the job to do. Anyway, since ODP provides the air and accommodation arrangements, there is little to do about lowering an individuals costs. I don't know about the current year, but team managers did not pay for air or hotel expenses in the past. More cost to be distribute.

Now, for the good stuff. ODP can be a very valuable program for a player. Not every year will you get a great coach. But, the playing of the game with other good players is great. Older players will definitely get a look from college coaches.

My 99 child participated this past year and it was a very good experience. The coaching was very good, my child learned a lot and most important, it motivated him and got him even more excited about soccer, working on his own, etc.

Costs (as I remember them) were:

      $65 tryout fee
$150 for Regional team (11 two hour practices with good coaching)
~$100 fee for Regional tournament (plus hotel if held away from your hometown)

Then if you make the state team:
~$330 for 5 weekends of practices (10 practices total) plus tournament in Portland (Friendship Cup - $330 covered this); practices were in Salem
      ~$145 uniform fee

If your child is a '00 s/he cannot make the regional camp/team so that would have been your total cost for this past year. I hear Regional camp is around $650 if your child makes it.

The fees listed are for 97 and older, the fees for the 98 and 99/00 years are not out yet. What they posted is only an estimate, fees are finalized as the payment time gets closer and many times actually goes up. But the fees they will list will be a good estimate.

the fees will be the same for the younger age groups. Only fee that may not apply will be the Regional camp fee if your child is too young ('00)
