    Drug testing for club coaches?

I hear that the Tennessee Soccer Association is drug testing their coaches. Is this something we should ask of our clubs in Oregon? Needless to say, coaches have considerable influence over our children. They travel with the team and occasionally have driving responsibilities. Estimated cost is $6,000. Thoughts please?

    Cost per coach?

Drug testing is probably a good idea. This is in light of how much some of the guys drink. But I don't understand your post. $6000 for how many coaches? What frequency? You are right, often times coaches do drive the players around at tournaments.

this is ridiculous. Are you saying we should drug test every person who influences our children? Teachers, school bus drivers, coaches, scout leaders, relatives, youth group leaders, peers....on....on...and on.

You can also encase them in a large plastic bubble since there are so many germs. You probably make your kid wear full body armor to ride his/her bike. All you're doing there is torturing them by forcing them to face the ridicule of their peers. Teaching them that when they get two blocks from the house they can ditch it all and go have fun, as long they put it all back on before they go home. So, in the long run, are you really helping them or hurting them?

      Please people.

Please people, try to think. Parents very often do not accompany their children to tournaments. If they do, often they are with the coach and under his/her control. This includes driving. No one, except someone with limited reading skills, is suggesting testing everyone that comes in contact with a child. Just the ones that have many, many opportunities to do unthoughtful things. Like drive while intoxicated. Like forgetting a child at a field. Like forgetting the way back to the hotel. Like getting into a fight with another coach at dinner after too many drinks. My DD's coaches over the years have done all of these and more, (not necessarily to her, but teammates). Drug testing is a thought, not the answer to every need or question. Get it?

I've been with the same club for almost 7 years. Every tournament has, at a minimum, 4 chaperone parents who rent vans. The coach rarely drives and when they do it's by themselves or with the assistant and it's only because they have to leave right after the match to either coach or watch another game. I guess we are just spoiled but I have never seen nor would I have ever suspect any of the things you mentioned. Does that mean they don't happen elsewhere? Certainly not. But if you take the proper measures you can eliminate the variables. I guess that's why I agree that drug testing would be ridiculous. Just another expense.

Does your place of work drug test?

Most businesses do drug testing. Maybe yours doesn't. Perhaps you feel that coaches are more reputable than the people you work with, or that children are less vulnerable. Drug testing is never an attack or an allegation against those being tested. It is just a precaution. It is merely a reminder to people that "you may get caught, so you probably shouldn't..."

Or it is a trust or maturity issue. Not all occupations drug test. I have been with my current employer for over 6 years and never been randomly (or otherwise) tested. Have never even heard of anyone being tested. My wife's employer on the other hand tests their employees quite often. I do not feel coaches are more reputable but I do feel it is the responsibility of the hiring party (clubs) to ensure, through their hiring practices, procedures and guidelines, that we are safe from these issues. Just like I would expect no less from my employer. Is this an end all cure all? No. Are there bad apples in every occupation? Sure. But for me, I wouldn't question the integrity of any of our club coaches. Just my opinion.

Way to stretch an idea to absurdity. You are an idiot.

You must not work with children very much if you are not familiar with how prolific Criminal background checks have become. Drug testing is one more way to help "(clubs) to ensure, through their hiring practices, procedures and guidelines, that we are safe from these issues." Others on this board may have forgotten the furor last fall over the FC coach. It only takes one incident to bring everyone up in arms.

Drug testing is not unusual. I have a hard time understanding why someone who is clean has an issue with peeing in a cup.

Maybe it should be done annually or in each new season. How about when they get tossed off the field, or when they are having melt down on the sideline and scaring a young ref? There is a long list of these horrid individuals, will do no good to name as they show up all the time. When they are in control we think that they are on behavior control meds. now or in anger management.
