FC and LO got the local invitation. The WSM U-15s could have fielded a competitive team. Have no idea if they were invited or applied, but that team is one of the best anywhere at that age group. Oh, and yes, they are an adidas team.

They were invited because their clubs hosted the entire tournament on alternating years. They didn't get invited because they were just good, the clubs put insurmountable work into making the tournament happen.

2. NIKE puts on the tournament, very little work to be done by "host" club. If the work was "insurmountable", it would never get done. MY DD's club team did it in a past year.

3. Manchester Cup is for Nike Premier Clubs, which used to be limited to just one club in a given metropolitan area. That is, Nike sponsored clubs weren't considered in the past. Portland was different in that there were two Nike Premier Clubs, Lake Oswego SC and FC Portland. That's why they alternated. Not sure about this year or status of local Nike Premier Clubs.

I agree that the work isn't insurmountable the host clubs put in a lot of work and it's more than just the participating team. It's a club wide effort.

I didn't attend this year, but have several times in the past. Historically Nike did very little other than make its fields available. Premiere International Tours does the organizing and the work. Maybe that changed this year. The tournament also used to be bigger. The last three years it was 20 boys teams and 20 girls teams. It used to be 40. Both LO and FC remain Nike sponsored clubs.

If that is the best girls teams the US has to offer then we are indeed in trouble. I didn't see very pretty soccer at all in the final. Almost everything was a long ball and I didn't see many passing combinations at all. It seemed to be more of who could be the most physical instead of the most skilled.

Nike does some but not that much; they do provide the fields and building access. Premier does the bulk of the work. The host clubs provide volunteers. There's a $500 fee for the tournament so what's "provided" starts with a $20,000 budget, but it has to cost more than that. LO and FC's websites both state they are Nike Premier Clubs. If there's another status, that's not clear. It hasn't always been 20 teams, but there were 40 boys teams as recently as 2008. Here's a recap from 2008 - there were 40 boys teams and 24 girls teams and they played at Nike and Catlin.

Over Memorial Day weekend, 64 of the nation's most elite U15 teams converged on Nike's World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. Over the four-day tournament 173 matches were held and 313 goals were fired into the back of the net.
