So far I see teams playing at the THUSC Showcase, FC Portland summer tournament, US Club Regionals in Seattle (and National Championships in Idaho if they win regionals) and Surf Cup. Any teams going to California or back east this summer for any of their showcase events?
HS club tryouts are in August. What will Oregon girls soccer look like next winter? Some predictions and feel free to chime in with your own.
OPL State Cup winners OSSA. Great starting 11, 12-14 are quality subs, but after that this team needs help. Substitution patterns will expose the holes when they go to Surf- can't always play your best 11 the whole game. Several THUSC players may try out.
OPL league winners and State Cup runners up THUSC Sodium. Definitely the best 20 in Oregon overall. Their second team could beat most first teams. Did they sub TOO much in the State cup final? I didn't see the fire I was used to watching. Several players have talked about trying out at different clubs- not sure if this team gets along as well as they used to. Is it better to be on a great team one of the best on the west coast) and not play very much or get a starting role on a team that's not so good?
FC Portland. Always close but never finishing it off. Strange subbing in State cup. Numerous varsity players on this team don't show the fire they do in high school. Will they continue with pool selection at FC next year? Wonder if most clubs that have two teams now will have the numbers next year? Will they still have Garrett Smith at the helm? His U.P. connection would keep girls there who might look to go elsewhere.
ESUFC. This team came miles this year and withstood several key defections. People just don't seem to want to make the drive to Gresham however.
WSM. I hear about squabbling and infighting on this team all the time. They have some good players, will they stay? Rumors about a THUSC and WSM merger seem to come up every day. Would it benefit either THUSC or WSM on the girls side?
Eugene. This team will continue to get better and better but the distance from Portland means they will always have to do it with homegrown players. They will never have a Portland kid driving down there for 3 times a week.
Oregon Rush. OYSA State winners. They did very well in the Far West league too. I would love to see them join the OPL but things seem to work out just right for them the way things are. Will represent Oregon very well at regionals. They have managed to lure several Portland area players across the hill to join them and I've heard several more may tryout there in the summer.
