Sometimes I wonder if this group (ODP) truly represents the best of Oregon. Are we leaving out the best players who can't afford or barely afford the cost of participation? I personally know of many outstanding players who chose not to try out because of financial constraints.
Actually, there is another venue...... it's called being hand picked by your coach or DOC to go to the "invite" this week to be "seen" by Hugo..... trust me if you weren't participating in ODP or didn't get tapped on the shoulder to the invite... then your kid probably isn't national team caliber. Oh, and by the way, the kids who were invited to Hugo's invite from our club are NOT ODP kids, so clearly you can get a second look even if you can't afford ODP.

Bingo.... Here it is, direct from the OPL website:

      id2 PROGRAM ELEMENTS:

      • There is no cost to be included in the id2 program.

      • US Club Soccer believes that capable players are sometimes overlooked for inclusion into the U.S. National Team pool because the players are not able to afford costly identification programs. The no-cost policy with id2 ensures that these players are able to be identified and developed, regardless of income level.

Some kids that were cut from the ODP tryouts were then nominated by their coaches for the ID2 program. Seems inconsistent, if the ODP coaches didn't think the kid was talented enough, then why try to get into the National program by sliding under the radar of a different program? What does that say about the ODP and ID2 programs for Oregon, when ODP cuts a kid, but ID2 nominees have "national" team potential? Both programs lose credibility at some point, since they can't decide who the best talent in Oregon is....

Anyone that has been in the Oregon ODP program knows how terrible the try out process is. I'd give much more credibility to the ID2.

Perhaps at some age groups and with respect to some clubs, the identification process was correct. However, in some age groups there were over 60 kids invited to participate. That's basically 4 complete teams. Sorry, but I think that the ID2 process is not nearly as perfect as you make it out to be.

I don't think either process is perfect. While the DOC's pick the initial invites to the training centers they have no say in who is invited back. That makes it fair to me.

Several kids were not invited back to his Training Center and several were added. The total stayed the same.

That's how it should be. At the younger age groups more kids should be added and as they get older that number will get less and less.

What is this We business? Do you have a turd in your pocket. This is my child's 4th year of ODP and never did I turn out. It was the player.

                        Invites

It depends upon how the coach/DOC perceives the program. Some coaches nominate a bunch of kids for the opportunity. It's a great opportunity: builds confidence, makes the kid feel good; probably makes the parents feel even better. Some coaches take it more seriously and nominate only standouts. We're not talking about the "best" on each particular team. It means the very best players from an age group. Those might all come from the same team or the two or three best teams in an age group. Example, if your team doesn't have a single player that could make the best team in the age group, probably shouldn't be nominating that player as part of a national id program.

We is actually the correct term since it involves money from me and time committment from both of us. The decision is made jointly, although mostly by the child.
