Thanks for responding. So, what really happens is that the verbals occurred in the junior year, which makes them U17 for the most part, which is about right. All of this "recruiting is done by the time they are U16" garbage is just that, garbage. I do know that some of the outstanding talent gets lots of attention earlier and some of the best players can get verbals early. But we are talking about the top girls in the country, not the top girls here in Oregon. The measuring stick is nationally, not locally.

And just by playing on a top team and going to higher profile tournaments does not guarantee that you will get more attention. They look at the individual players, not the team. And they look for qualities that the average eye won't see. They also look for fit into their system. Trust me, it isn't good exposure if you go to one of those tournaments and your team gets blown out.

THUSC player is on Iridium. ESUFC player is on U15 Tottenham.

Every year there are a few, very few, girls from Oregon that are considered "top girls". Even with its flaws, some can be found on the ODP Region IV website, (regioniv.com, then ODP, then player pools - '93-'97). The 1992 girls from Oregon included a very unusually large group of 7, I believe. One can also look at recruits that have verballed at sites.google.com/site/soccerrecruits/ and then click on the top where it says "click to see ....". Posted information includes by birth year, by club, by college, plus news. Also check out archives info for 2009 and 2010 to see same information for current college freshman and sophomores; this gives you a snapshot of which clubs are getting their players ready for college.

One definitely wants to be on a good team (with a good coach and players) so that you get to top tournaments where you will be seen. You are right, coaches don't go to see bad teams unless they are there to see the other team. More likely they go to games with two good teams.

Someone posted earlier in this thread that he thought it was odd to be talking about college when this is about U-14's. Well, if your don't get established soon, like U-14, on a good team with good coaching, forget the exposure you'll need at U-15 (somewhat), U-16 (a big deal), and U-17 (beginning of the club year). Girls offers solidify in December to February of their U-17 year as high school juniors. After that time, spots are available but not with the best colleges or the most athletic money.

My post was directed at those who believe WSM to be the only team with stacked players and others who want to be seen should tryout for their team. The U14 season hasn't begun so it remains to be seen. The WSM players are good and I'm sure they will be competitive vs WA teams this year. However, there are talented players other teams and sometimes where you least expect to see it. I agree that by U15 you should be in a place where you will gain the most, if soccer is the direction your child wants to go. I do not agree that the WSM team will be the only team that will get exposure to college scouts.

Thanks for responding with such a terrific post. Good information that is accurate.

And I completely agree with the poster above who says WSM is the only club who will get exposure. My point about getting blown out in top tournaments is directed at them because I think there is a chance of that happening due to their style of play, which will not be improved with their recent additions. Their reliance on kick and chase and a sweeper is not good for development and will be easily defeated by teams at the top tournaments. Getting beaten handily in those tournaments is more of a negative than a positive.

You are correct in saying that you want to be on a top team. Some people think that means THE top team (and who that top team is, is debateable). What it means is that you should be on a premier level team who goes to the showcase tournaments. Trust me, if you are a standout player, you will be noticed, regardless of which premier team you are on. And conversely, if you are just a decent player who happens to be on a very good team, that will be noticed, but not in a way that you want it to be noticed.

Bottom line: its more about the player than the team.

hmm wsm kick and chase? really interesting, we'll see this summer and fall. i think this thread was about where teams are heading in terms of tournaments. Don't see one mention that wsm is the only team capable of playing in big tournaments, but that was a nice leap though.

You're right, the coach wouldn't be on here trying to add value to his life by talking about his team, it's a parent from his team trying to add value to their life by bragging about their kid's team.

I am not a WSM parent but what I read was a WSM parent defending their team after someone negatively posted about them. I read no bragging. Someone said that WSM plays kick and chase and they disagreed. I also disagree and think WSM plays a very nice looking game. To me the best styles come from WSM and THUSC at U14.

I would agree with this. I would also add TM Rage to this list. The Rage's big problem is that they can't finish.

The last 2 years of Oregon girls has sent between 12-24 girls each year to division 1 schools. There is another dozen + from this years u-18 class that just finished. Most of those girls were never posted on any site to track.

The interesting part is that most of the girls came from 2 teams in the past years and those age groups sent the largest amount of Division 1 girls from Oregon in a long time. This years u-18 class had more talent, but it was spread out on 5 teams and the pool became extremely diluted. More good players than the past 2 years, but they were all too spread out.

This u-14 age group is proving to be yet another all-star class. Talent all over. There are a couple teams that have a higher percentage of talent than the rest, but not exclusively. I think this age group will become very similar to the u17s that just ended, with 4 very very talented teams. The 14 need to be consolidated by the u15 year to the 4 or 5 teams. That just my opinion

I do not want to pick on this team, as they do have some very good players, but in all honestly they are now known as the team that "Boots" everything out of the backfield. They have turned to a kick and chase team when it hits the defenders first. I have never seen them play nice balls to the outside from the back. They have very fast athletic defenders, this works for that team. I am NOT even saying they are unskilled. I am saying this their strategy to win..

I am sorry, THUSC U14 does not play a nice brand of soccer. The best styles come from WSM, FC, and TM Rage.

True, which it the reason for my comments. And furthermore, if people will go back some pages, there has been much bragging about going to top tournaments with this team. I will offer up that if they play the boot it ball that I have seen them play, it will not work well in these tournaments. I am not a WSM parent, my daughter is on a different team but I would still root for WSM in these tournaments so that they represent Oregon soccer well. However, I have my doubts given their style of play.
