LO finally announces coaching staff, looks as if the rumor of Gaff leaving THUSC is definitely true. He is coaching the U11 and U13 girls at LOSC. Their staff looks pretty good on the girls side. They have put some resources to their second teams as well.

Boys side good too
The boys side looks good as well, top A licensed experienced coaches with some good young coaches sprinkled in as well.

Very solid staff on both the boys and girls, they typically have a good staff though. Looks like they brought in some new coaches on both the boys and girls side, good for them.

With such a good staff, why are the teams typically not very good from U10-U14? I won't count U15 and up as it's not purely an LO team at that point.

My $.02 worth tells me that many go here initially for the name and coaching. Many are not from the LO area. Then after a year or so, find that there are just as competitive teams nearby their home and move back.
Rumor has it as well that some of the local LO parents arent so nice to the outsiders coming in. That their stature in life seems be flaunted and this can turn other parents off.
Two players on our team left for this specific reason a year apart.

I think LO is a good club and I'm glad to see they have a solid coaching staff. I'm sure their teams will develop more in the future but I'm so tired of hearing that "developing players" excuse. You can develop players and still win games.

My daughter's LO team through the U11-U14 years:
U11 = 2 non-LO players
U12 = 4 non-LO players
U13 = 2 non-LO players
U14 = 4 non-LO players
These are typical numbers of any club team wouldn't you say?
I can speak for only our team. Our team families and the manager always welcomes those who live outside of LO. Those coming new on the team from outside the area also need to make an effort to befriend parents, it's a two-way street in my eyes. One year we had a family who would never step out of their car. Finally some of our parents walked to the car and asked them to roll the window down so they could introduce themselves and welcomed them to meet everyone.

I favor development

WSM, THUSC, and FC are highly competitive at all the ages so I would say they are developing just fine. What makes LO so much better than all those other clubs? How are they developing players better than the other clubs? Without a doubt you could say that OSSA is a strong club but it's a merger so it's not all LO development.

I am not familiar enough with Portland-area clubs to reasonably answer your questions.

It can be possible to have the best of both worlds.

The majority of the LOSC players are from LO, not a large area to draw from but they still compete at almost every age group. Seems to me that they do pretty well with what they are given. I am sure their coaches would love to draw in as many kids as the others do. Look at WSM and THUSC, they are the only competitive clubs in an area that has many large high schools thus many elementary and middle school kids feeding in to these schools. You would sure hope that they would have decent teams as they have a much larger population base than the more community based clubs like LOSC, SSC, WUSC etc. These three clubs, for example, have kids that feed in to only 6 high schools and they have three clubs in this local area. Think how strong this area would be if all the kids from Lake Oswego, Lakeridge, Tigard, Tualatin, West Linn and Wilsonville all fed in to one or even two clubs. THUSC, WSM really are one club in all reality, THUSC has been able to draw in all the best girls for the most part and WSM all the best boys from a pretty large area. Not excuses but definitely an advantage for those clubs, more power to them.
