It has nothing to do about obligation. OYSA ODP has a contractual obligation with the Portland Rain for a period longer. You cant just up and jump ship the first time something "greener" comes along. I dont know how long that obligation lasts, but Im sure that once it's over the Timbers will want your money too.
Interesting and effective system. ODP U-12 to U15 then the DA for U16 and U18.
My only question is how does the OPL feel about this. It looks like Gavin has sold out the OPL out. Why join OYSA? Why not build something through the next best assoc the OPL, something Gavin helped create because OYSA (who operates ODP) stinks.

What a mess soccer in Oregon is.
There was no "sell out". Its called scale of economics.
1) Build something from scratch, footing the bill from day one til first game. Hiring coaches, creating policies and attracting players (and hoping you get the best of all right away)
or
2) Merge (take over) an existing program, with existing coaches and immediate income in full effect. Build on that program, adding all of the above as you go.
I take it you didn't major in business did you ? Quit blaming others for something that you disagree with.
ps................at the OYSA AGM today is was announced that either a merger or partnership between MLS and WPS maybe in the works and if so, the exact same program the boys have with MLS, will be required of the womens teams.

All 6 of them?! Sweet! Now I gotta find a job in on the east coast in one of the cities with a team and hope the league doesn't fold in the next 12 months!

I think the poster was speaking of both the WPS and WPSL. Either way, I see the Timbers taking this program over as well.
The DA is fantastic. The quality is extremely high. Oregon needs a DA program to help get their male players national competition and recognition on a regular schedule. ODP is nice but it is too sporadic. The DA will take the best kids and they will train together year round. They will compete against other teams doing the same. It is very serious youth team soccer on a national scale. DA kids cannot play ODP, attend college ID camps, or play with other teams. It's all DA all the time. I'm so glad to see Oregon move in this direction via the Timbers. Couldn't care less if it's OYSA or OPL. The DA is the future for boys soccer development in the USA.

Yes the DA provides a lot of opportunity. It is my understanding however that DA is for 16-18 year olds. I believe it us wrong to consider this a DA vs. ODP thing. From 12-15 kids have opportunity through ODP. From 16-18 it becomes development academy. I am frankly thankful the Timbers are taking this over. For too long it has been a battle between clubs, this should bring a broader perspective to the market.

Yes it should. Something that has been needed for some time. Too man ego's involved that prevented it from ever working right.
If OYSA/ODP is good enough for the MLS why is it not good enough for the OPL?
We have been sold a line of BS by the OPL. We aksed what about a ODP solution for the OPL. OYSA/ODP is a nightmare. Poorly run, crap coaches and to much $$$. Did anyone see the cost for ODP this year?
So the answer is no new program just the same old same old OYSA ODP with green jerseys.
This is a real eye opener, as to the real motive behind the OPL. The promise was more quality, let's see?
Better OPL leagues. Same teams, same issues with schudels.
NWCL what a joke this has been. How many cancelled games
ID2 joke
Timbers academy OYSA, your kidding right.
The OPL has one motive to make or take your money. For the crap organization that OYSA is at least they invested in Oregon soccer by giving money to ODP, loans to clubs and they helped with travel cost. The OPL, not.
DA is not new, ask FC how it worked out for them. Not enough committed players to make DA work at FC, however opening up the option for all players in Oregon to make one organization under the Timbers umbrella is a good idea. It's a different model from other MLS teams, since the 8 headed monster in Portland believes they can still keep their players and thus their jobs; whereas in many other MLS cities the MLS teams actually form a club that trains together all the time and players do not go back to their home club. It will be interesting to see how this works out and which club will be first to ban their players from playing to their highest level possible.
Not being negative, I really applaud the Timbers for giving boys an opportunity to play at the highest level year round!!! Hope the OPL lets the kids maximize this opportunity over the long haul.

The DA is also different now. 2 very strong clubs in Seattle--Sounders FC and Crossfire. More quality clubs in Cal North to combine to make a very attractive and strong Northwest division. 2 strong and viable national showcase tournaments, and a viable national playoff crowning a true age group champion. It seems if there is a time for Oregon youth soccer to finally be less provincial this is it. But the proof will be in the pudding. The other MLS/DA teams are run like european pro youth academies. The kids get top training, wear top gear, play top teams, all subsided by the parent club to differing extent. I believe the closer we can approach the rest of the world model for professional youth development the better.
