      ECNL Team Oregon

Getting back to the original post: Should there be a program of elite players like ECNL? One concern is that Oregon is not big and the pool of talented players is limited. I met a dad last year who's daughter played for a "D" team on Arsenal in S. Cal. Yes, the "D" team. There isn't a club in Oregon that could draw enough players to a tryout to consider a "D" team. So we just don't have the depth that some western states have. But for elite players, playing at the highest level available to them is important. ECNL does offer a high level of competition which would be good for the elite players. But what we have now is NWCL, ODP and in a few years, the Timbers development program. For ECNL to work, it would have to be a consolidation of these programs into one elite program, otherwise the result will be a dilution of the talent within the state and therefore Oregon would not be as competitive as they could be. However, I believe the biggest problem with creating an ECNL team would be determining what club or organization would oversee it, and who would coach it. There's too much territoriality with clubs, coaches, and parents in Oregon that would prohibit the formation of an ECNL team.

For most kids playing in Oregon, what they have offered to them now is as good as it's going to get. Hopefully they are being developed well by their clubs and if they desire, will be able to compete at the next leve.
