    coaching

I just wanted to comment about the question of is a personal trainer necessary. Yes, today HS level sports are way more competitive than they used to be. If your child doesn't have the right skill sets by the time they enter HS they don't stand a chance being on the team. Somewhat sad but true.

I would stay clear of Paul Goodrich.

He has great references, why would you say that?

Probably for what ever reason, Paul didnt accept their child to train with him.

Paul doesnt want everyone. Only those that are truly committed to the game.

Hahah he's a joke. Spend your money getting touches from a local trainer. Those who are Truly committed to the game don't want Paul

Im guessing your the JOKE because you think you know more. Its ok to admit your kids not good enough. Get em someone that will train them well enough and you instill some commitment as well, maybe Paul will take another look at them in a couple of years.

Both my kids have trained with just about (someone will know a name I hadnt heard of) everyone "top notch" in the Portland area. At the younger ages Paul was instrumental in their advancement in the sport. My son went on to play/train at WS with a coach there and my daughter went on to train with a local woman coach. We left Paul only because my kids were going different directions (club wise) and we sought out training locally there. Had Paul been closer to both kids team trainings, we would still be there.

Why would I have to be careful ? Both my kids had great experiences with him for a long time. I would recommend him to any and everyone. Im sorry it didnt work out for you. Maybe it's you that should be careful, since you have ZERO experience with him and are on here spouting off like you do.

I am being careful because I know enough about him and that I don't want my kid training with him but thanks for the warning.

I know a professional player whose career Paul set back by about a year. So there's that. Paul was a really good player, and is a decent coach, but is a bit of a nut, in my opinion. (I suspect that is part of a persona he puts on.) Your player will probably improve, but with most any decent private trainer they will improve.

It's pretty easy to claim that you make the best players, when you only accept the best players. I'd love to see someone take, for example, a baseball player and turn them into one of the "best players" in a handful of years. That I would respect a whole lot.

So he trained a player that later became a pro and because of this players greatness and Pauls obvious excellent training that made him that good, the player lost a year before becoming that professional ? You make no sense.

You obviously no nothing about this man. What team or teams has he coached ? You are right, Paul was (still is) a good player and an excellent trainer.

You've already admitted that your child or children have never trained him, but because you heard that he somehow hinder some player that went pro, he should be stayed away from.

You are right. You should stay a long ways away from him.

There are some good trainers in and around Portland. In my experience the best/better ones are harder to get time with and are only interested in players that really want to be there. This is very different to the players who are there because their parents make them.

If a player enjoys their time with a trainer then that is a good sign that they are having fun and more than likely learning something and developing their individual game.

Even in So Cal where you get training 3 times a week you find the vast majority of players using trainers. Let me tell you they charge a lot more money down there for the sessions!!!
