What did this thread have to do with WSM? Did anyone have any thoughts about the mobile training center after attending? Good experience? Bad experience? We were at the training last weekend and I was impressed that the clubs did not send too many people that clearly were not at that caliber. On the girls side it looked like the right people .... a couple were missing but they may have been injured. My daughter had a great time and was pumped for soccer again. High school soccer just wasn't the same!!! Looks like the winter season will start soon.
Sodium Fan are you wearing your armour??? You have been awfully quiet lately.
Good luck to all. I for one am looking forward to the upcoming season.
Now why would I need armor? LOL! I've been keeping a low profile as of late and have decided to leave the battling to the girls on the field. How did your DD like HS soccer? Completely different ballgame than club. Agree? Disagree?

Have a great winter!
My daughter attended Sandy HS and yes iit was very different!! Overall she enjoyed herself so that is good. She was a freshman in a new school district and I think the soccer helped her integrate into the crowd. There were actually 2 individuals from your club that were also on Sandy. One injured and the other is on Ireland. But for the girl from Ireland and my daughter, they would potentially have totally sucked!! I'm ready for real ball although I am wary of how well our ESUFC team will show given all of the loses and the no keeper situation. Fortunately, my daughter has some other opportunities going on so it will not be detrimental if we struggle. Its all good and I am looking forward to some normalcy (you know... soccer games and driving every weekend!!). BTW: I think my stepson-to-be is friends with your daughter LOL. It would appear so on facebook.

Two things that stood out to me this year, the first was the amount of injuries. The second was the apparent downturn in quality of officiating.
It seemed like every team we played had at least 4 injured players, including us! Knees, ankles and especially concussions! Is it because the play is that much more aggression based as opposed to skill based? Or do you think the school districts are following much more stringent policies when it comes to injuries? And the officials, yikes. I saw so many handballs, offsides and flagrant fouls than I've ever seen. I saw a post in another thread addressing this issue and it asked where these ref's come from and if they are part of the same pool as the clubs use. Would love to get your feedback on this.
Is your daughter participating in ODP this year? If so, what do you think of the new uniforms?
Too funny about the stepson-to-be & facebook friends, she has like 600!! LOL!! You have my email? If so, email me his name and I'll ask her. Truly a small world. :)
'95 girls went last weekend. While my daughter went I had to temper her dreams. This is just ploy for USYSA to say they are looking at everyone so they can compete with US Club and their ID2 system. The argument being that anyone can be seen for the National team without regard of the cost involved.
But lets be real.... National team players are obvious and scouting them is easy. Invite the whole state and watch for 10 minutes, drop 90%, watch 10 more minutes and drop another 90% and you would be left with 10 girls that would still be short of the National team.
My take was slightly different. I don't think that it will lead to National Team necessarily. However, when you do ODP and Regional ODP and you do these training sessions you are being seen by more and more coaches. I don't necessarily agree that the players chosen for say ODP national camps stand out any more than most of the other regional pool players. They have so little time to pick these kids at the younger ages that the more you can be seen likely the better. So, my take on the little I snuck in to watch was that it is yet another opportunity to train with incredible coaches and players alike from several age groups. My daughter enjoyed last weekend very much and if your 95 is a girl then they were out there at the same time.

Of course the ODP National Camp kids stand out more.... That is why they are taken over ODP Regional Pool kids. It is a filtering process.

I will agree to a point however, there comes a point at which it is difficult for the national scouting coaches to have the time to even look at all the kids at the younger ages. If it were that simple then the same kids would make it every year. Some do and some don't.
There are some that stand out and others that are given a chance. In order to truly be able to see a stand out then you would need to be able to see the individual players in different situations ie with different groups. As an example if you are a forward that has been grouped with a group that doesn't have a strong mid then you may never even get to touch the ball. At the same time the defense may look great or bad whatever the case may be.
I think at the younger ages they try to give different people chances with the exception of a handful and only a handful. For example some of the kids that made national camp last year didn't even get chosen for the regional pool this year. Did they play worse? I don't think so. They are still exceptional. It all comes down to opportunity and being noticed. I can think of at least one player (no relation to me) not getting chosen for regional that I would hands down pick every time over a player that went to national camp. Why? Because I would pick the consistently solid and very good over the occasionally great but usually not. These are the things that would be impossible to notice in 10 minutes.
Other factors could come into play as well. My daugther did make the regional pool but she didn't think she would. One day the coach and manager screwed the time up and the girls thought they would be playing at 11:00 so they were eating breakfast at 7:00 to last until 1:00. Instead the coach comes running in telling them there was a mix up and they were to be there at 8:00. So my daugther who had gorged herself on bacon and pancakes was about to throw up the entire time. She said she felt sick as a dog the rest of the day. Was that a accurate representation of those kids. It certainly was not apples to apples.
If you ask me, most of the regional pool players are exceptional. At that point it comes down to good luck, good weather, feeling good ... etc., but then I'm just a parent and not a scout. :)

Couldn't agree more. Players who can play at that level are a "know it when you see it" thing. You don't need to watch them for hours to pick them out. Think watching Michael Jordan play basketball. You didn't need to watch the whole game to identify him as the best player on the court. You could simply tell. A player ready for consideration in the national pool stands out in the same way when playing against her/his local peer group. It's a great experience though and any player who gets invited should go.

Using that criteria I believe my daughter will be there and I would never try to discourage her from thinking she has a chance albeit a long shot. I think that any exposure the kids can get is good. There are standouts but they won't all be picked the first time. As such, it is important to always play like it is a tryout and to bring your best game everytime. I don't see what the point in trying to predispose them to thinking that it is just a ploy. I choose to view it as yet another accomplishment,
That was the point of the "know it when you see it" post. Of course you should have your kids take advantage of the opportunity and they should try their best. They can do all that and they will still know in a short time who the best players are and if there's a true standout it will be obvious. That doesn't mean it's not a great opportunity to play and learn. It's the parents who need to watch getting ahead of themselves, not the kids.
I think I am interpreting it as a fatalist view. If you are a standout then you would have already been picked and I disagree. If you are a standout then keep trying. Just because you didn't get picked this time does not mean you won't next. But then I truly believe my daughter is a standout. So for me it comes down to never being discouraged. Kids know when they are a standout or not. But nothing is written in stone.

It is an incredibly fine line between many regional players and national pool players, in many cases depending on how you play on a given day and, unfortunately, politicking. There are very few who are obvious (the michael jordan types); many more are on the fringe. Speaking from experience, it is not a false hope to keep trying. Totally agree that nothing is written in stone and if the desire and talent are there, keep at it.
