    High School Soccer

I know that at U11-U14 there are typically 1-2 teams per age group. How much does that diminish at high school? Are the teams minimized to just a small amount per club and do some clubs lose teams at that age group completely? How common is it for a club to not have a team at certain age groups?

I would guess a lot of kids might quite soccer once hitting high school because of other social activities, etc.

As an example, there is another thread on this site that lists all the tryout times for clubs that offer U15G teams. A HUGE dropoff from the 40-odd teams at U14 last year.

I would say it varies, but there is some movement and changes. Definitely busier in high school, so quite a few players quit or make changes. Don't know the stats, but there seemed to be a lot less teams for the girls at least.

Also, it's both good and bad that they do club tryouts for winter in the summer now before the fall high school tryouts.

Why do they do try outs so early?

          Why early??

Keep in mind that a few years ago the high school kids tried out in November and now in August. They try-out early for a couple of reasons:
          1) If a team is playing in a Thanksgiving tournament this gives them time to get some practices in.....
          2) High School coaches could not snag players to play on their club teams....
          3) Weather is nicer :-)

I believe it's mostly to mitigate the influence HS coaches have on the club choice of their players.

              OSAA Rules

Just making sure everyone knows. See OSAA for complete rules. Our coaches are very careful about this, don't know about all coaches.

              http://www.osaa.org/publications/han...rdPolicies.asp

              (Revised December 2004)
              C. Team Sports Limitation. Schools may conduct practices and/or compete in contests in team sports (baseball, basketball, football, softball, soccer, volleyball) only during the designated OSAA sports seasons as outlined in Rule 6. It shall be a violation of the rule if there is any attempt during the Association year to gather more than two members of the same high school program together per day outside the OSAA defined season to receive specialized athletic instruction from any coach associated with the participating athletes’ high school program. Attempts to circumvent the rule by encouraging team members to attend out-of-season practices or camps during the Association year other than through general dissemination of information or brochures shall be considered a violation of this rule.
