It is the coaches job to encourage mistakes
I am sure I will get skewered here, but in all honesty it is the youth coaches job to allow mistakes to happen. The only way a child develops is by making mistakes. if everyone is sitting on the sideline booing and criticizing how many kids are going to stick their neck out. This includes if we commented "whoops you weren't quite good enough" Unlucky allows the kid to remain willing to take risks the next time.
As far as use in other sports, if you talk to rowers (on a crew) they will often talk about the set of the boat being off, the balance wasn't good, again the idea is to depersonalize the mistake, and encourage pushing boundaries the next time
