    State Cup Finalists

Remember this time last year when the FC Portland & LOSC honks were bragging up how dominant their programs were because each club had five (girls) teams in the U12 - u18 finals?

Twelve months later... (Teams in the finals)
    THUSC ....... 4
    ESUFC ....... 2
    OR Rush ..... 2
    Southside ... 2
Bridlemile; FC Portland; LOSC; and Westside ... ONE each

BTW... both clubs have only one boys team in the finals, as well. What a difference a year makes!

Congrats to all finalists and Good Luck!

Pretty amazing isn't it? Wasn't it the FC fans who were bellowing about 6 or 7 teams in the girls finals last year? (of course we know only 1 team won in the finals).

You are exactly right, what a difference a year makes!

No one was bellowing anything. It was a simple and true statement. FC had 6 girls teams in the finals last year. Very commendable. This year was simply not FC's year. They had many girls teams in the semi's but at the end of the day, only one winner. It happens. It does not make the club or the teams any less. Just not FC's year.

Good luck to all state cup finals teams. Also, congrats to THUSC. Four girls teams in the finals is awesome!

You got to remember one thing. FC is only concerned with development of players and not winning them. All part of the plan. I think all of us FC parents have been hoodwinked! Oh maybe next year.

I am an FC parent. My daughter is a U14 player and has been with the club for 3 years. She left a premier gold team mid year. She was a starting player who played almost 100% of every game. When she transferred to FC, it was right after the state cup roster freeze and she was put on the B team. I did not think, oh my, she will not be in state cup this year or oh my, she is on a B team. We made the move for one reason- FC develops players. We did not make the move to get numerous medals, trophies, state cup titles or major tourney titles. She got all of those things on her previous team. We left her old club because they did not develop my daughters skills. FC has done an incredible job with that. She is much more confident in everything she does, on and off the field. Her coaches have been extrodinary and she has grown so much.

She may not have the state cup titles like a THUSC player but her skills and confidence are far above most her age. To us, that is most important. So, many posters can laugh at the FC development philosophy but our kids are the ones that will be successful in the long term.

Nicely said, I agree with you. But winning State Cup would be cool.

I am glad the moved worked out for your daughter.

Let me address the last paragraph.
"She may not have the state cup titles like a THUSC player but her skills and confidence are far above most her age." - Let's face it, most kids won't play past high school. So, don't you think it is more fun for a player to get to win some state titles and travel to regionals? Or get stuck in a development program and never win "The Big One?"

And as so far as development; you mention THUSC, let's look at the most recent crop of "graduates", the Neon team. Now I don't have all the statistics in front of me but didn't they ALL go to colleges based on some sort of scholarship? Most at pretty prestigious & D1 schools? What does that say for the program?? They can win State titles AND get the development to get scholarships and play beyond high school?? Sounds like a pretty good program to me!!

So why does everyone harp on FC being the development program when THUSC has proven you CAN get the development to advance AND still win?

              Just a thought.

Winning state would be nice but like I said before, it isn't everything. My daughter gets so much more from being on her team, even when they are not winning their games.

LOSC actually has 2 teams in the finals - u12 girls and u14 boys.

Congrats to Neon but there was a team that graduated players last year that won quite a bit that now has players at a rather impressive list of "prestigious & D1 schools" That list of schools is UofP (3), UofO (2), Stanford, Santa Clara, St.Mary's, Penn, PSU, SPU etc. Yes. It is possible to get the development AND still win. It is even possible to develop -- U20 National Team (2) --- and play in a Regional Final. It's been done! Believe it or not, there has been some teams with resumes that surpass the mighty Neon.

I never said there wasn't any other teams that players went on to play from. The original post sighted THUSC as an example so I was referencing a THUSC team.

I'm sure there are plenty of teams who's players advance from all clubs, we don't have to list them all.

I think you have the right attitude.

Winning state for our team would be a lot of fun. Is it the end all? No. My daughter will likely play past high school...assuming she wants to. Not winning state cup will not take her individual accomplishments away from her. Where I am going with this is that she was developed by ESUFC coaches and can hang with any team out there. Would it be nice if some already developed regional ODP team players wanted to come to ESUFC? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, at the end of the day much of it will come down to geography, convenience, time and money.

I totally know what you are speaking to with FC Portland's development of players. Personally I think ESUFC is similiar to FC Portland in its development of players. We have some incredible coaches, several of which are division one college coaches. We also have Gavin which is a direct feed into the Timbers program. These coaches attract other coaches and so on. I am proud of what ESUFC does irrespective of whether or not we win state titles.

Another note, a previous poster commented that ESUFC had 2 girls teams in the finals. I believe in addition to that they have 3 boys teams. Not bad as a club.

                        Go Arsenal!!!

I've been following this site for a couple years now. My overall impression is that, in general, FC and LOSC parents are not active participants on this forum (maybe club policy---I don't know). The one exception might be the threads posted by the rather intense parents of the U14 girls league. It does seem that some of those unregistered comments probably do come from FC/LOSC parents, almost always defending their teams after pointed (and maybe unnecessary) comments. Again, I don't know. Personally, I don't remember any over-the-top bragging by either club last year at this time. Yes---numbers were pointed out. Those clubs were impressive (dominating?) by anyone's standards. But there wasn't a surge of bragging FC/LOSC "honks" filling the threads. I'm not going back to look, but probably those finalist numbers were posted by unregistered guests. Besides, isn't this what we all love about soccer? The best teams don't always go forward. But the ones that do go forward are generally deserving of the opportunity.

Well said. Next year there will be no bragging rights since none of our clubs will win any State Cup titles. Hard to believe we will get excited about whatever end-of-the year tournament the OPL comes up with. Expect a lot of drama about the bracketing though as the DOC's all try to seat their teams to the best advantage. What a lovely future...

I believe you are on the wrong thread. We are talking about the 2010 State Cup Finalists on this one. :)
