    Position change for your player

I am curious how to handle getting my daughter an opporunity to play a position outside her norm (defense).

My daughter is very talented in her position but I am really wanting her to get more experience in other areas of the field. I have let the coaches know but have not seen any movement. My daughter loves her role but feel rounding out her skills will help.

So with coaches being asked and no changes, what would be the next steps?
Especially with High School getting ready to start.

Jump up and down waiving your hands in the air always works for me :)

No. Im just kidding. Your player should ask the coaching staff as well. Be persistent.

If the coach is focused on development and the best interest of the player you need not be concerned. However, if the coach is more of a "recruiter" coach and focused on wins, likely no amount of persistance will work.

A rock solid reliable defender is worth 4-5 average midfielders and forwards. I really do like the idea of a player that can play the whole field, but this is not always an option. If the coach was unsure or not secure with your daughters ability she would probably playing midfield. To many parents think defense is some sort of a punishment. Its not! It is the 2nd most important job on the field. 1ST being the goalie. She will just need to sell herself in her position for high school try outs. Summer workouts are just a month away. Wish her the best....

            Look for other Opportunities

Defense is important, but your player will be a whole lot better if she understands the roles that the other players play. Hard to tell the age (u-14?) but her coach should have been doing that all along for the reason stated above and also because first impressions change and so do skill sets. There's been many a mid-fielder who moved back to fullback and centerbacks who turned out to be effective forwards etc. She should keep asking to play elsewhere to get that experience. If that doesn't work, other than time there's no reason why she can't play with other teams to get that experience or look for some guest play opportunities over the summer.
