OPL Club Finances

Clearly a tough decision though a realistic look at who you're making the decision for should simplify the debate. What do the kids playing in your club need... not just the handful who might be ODP, Div 1 type players, but all those kids on all your teams. What does OPL offer? Seems narrowly focused on the few with resources, talent, and supportive parents to keep them in the competitive game at the top level. If this is your priority, too, then I guess you're are headed down the right path. It's good some clubs continue to support a broader goal for the majority of soccer-playing kids in Oregon.

OPL offers different levels in their league just like OYSA. At our club we have some first year players at U12 and U13 and they fit in quite well and the parents had no complaints.

I heard that the phones at Southside were disconnected for a few hours last week. That certainly doesn't look good for OPL clubs that one of their members is already having financial issues. I think it shows how much they need the league if their clubs are all to stay solvent or even become solvent.

Makes me wonder where all the money from the leagues will be going as we all know it only has to go to the eight 'member' clubs and not to any other club. It's a good thing they broke off from OYSA to run leagues and make money on all those saps that are buying the party line about going there for the competition. Not sure why clubs want to help their competition. There must be some good analogies out there for this, but I can't think of any right now as it must be unprecedented.

Yes all those poor saps that won State Cup today. Look at the results. From U12-U18, OPL won 5 out of the 7 on the boys side (with the other two being CFC) and 6 out of 7 on the girls side (Rush was the other). Those poor, poor saps.

I love how people love to start rumors with no concrete evidence. You HEARD their phones were down yet you don't actually know. And if they were down you have no evidence on why they were down. I thought as adults we were past starting rumors.

With 4 of the 6 on the girls side being THUSC. It's only going to get worse with 3 or 4 of the OPC clubs dominating OPL and the rest spending $$ to support them.

In all fairness my phone has been shut off before through no fault of my own. Let's not be so judemental.

Ask their employees when they got their last check. Ask their vendors how many are past due. They are really hurting and trying to stop the word from getting out. Good thing it's tryout time so they can get new money; but too bad it will be used to pay past bills and not set aside for the future.

Soccer Club Taxes

Soccer Club tax forms (990) are all due on May 15th if they are a non-profit. You should ask to see the tax returns of the club before you commit your child to their team. Will they be able to pay the coach of your child's team? Can they rent fields? Can they pay their office overhead? Are they past due on any of their bills?

If their tax returns look the way they do, would you really want them to have your money? Are they truly being fiscally responsible with your funds? Are they a good investment? Parents need to take back control. There is nothing wrong with asking the hard questions and holding them accountable.
