UF CAN afford men's soccer - it just has no interest because its alumni have no interest. It has been that way forever, and is just a function of being located in the deep south.

Absolutely agree that they can afford, just look at what they did for lacrosse. Sport specific stadium and facilities. Hired a top coach more that a year in advance of starting to allow her to recruit. Disagree about alumni not having interest. Many do, but soccer is way down the line from FB and BB. Even further down was lacrosse. Do you think UF alumni had an interest in lacrosse? I suspect a huge portion of older alums did not even know it was a NCAA sport. Their own athletic information department was so uninformed that they initially listed the program as playing in the SEC, which has no lacrosse. It comes down to Title IX, as was referenced by a prior poster.

IF SEC had a men's soccer league then UF wouldn't want to be left out and it would find a way to start up a men's team before UCF and USF could have their soccer teams join the SEC men's soccer league.

Are you saying only about 7,000 Florida high school seniors will get an ivitation to attend UF and many of those will not even decide to attend UF?

52,179 student in Florida are expected to qualify for the Academic Scholars Bright Futures award that pays for 100% of tuition and $300 of books. 46,216 Florida high school students are expected to qualify for the Medallion level of Bright Futures that covers 75% of tuition.
Most of these Florida seniors will apply to the Big Four Public Universities in Florida just to see if they can get in. There isn't room for the top level Bright Futures students in the combined freshmen class of UF, FSU, UCF and USF. The students need to apply to other colleges in Florida too as safety nets. Many students with over 4.0, 1400, high school Latin takers hoping to attend medical school don't get into UF or FSU. More students are staying in Florida to use the Bright Futures Academic Scholarship according to the article below.

It is not too late for the Bright Futures seniors to apply to other colleges in Florida in case they don’t get admitted to one of the Big Four.

Its almost too late. Jan 15th is typically the last opportunity to apply. Hard to schedule visits and properly research several school by then.

Many will have to accept the reality of Florida Western or Daytona type schools.

Apply to have backups. Have seen many learn the hard way and have to attend community college but then get into one of the bigger colleges in two. There was a suma cum laude grad with the complete package who was sure she would get into UF or FSU but did not and ended up at CC.

Almost 100,000 Bright Futures recipients expected. Limited freshmen spots at the Big4. Better apply to more.

They all apply to all the same colleges in Florida, and the colleges take all the top Bright Futures that they can fit.

True. Good grades, good scores and the right hooks will prevail. Schools want smart student who are also active and socially aware. Good grades and scores only are not enough.

Start up a non-profit or put it on the application. UF and FSU do not check to verify anything on the Coalition application. They don’t even check the SAT or GPA as it is a self reported application, and if admitted then at graduation the senior submits the test scores and GPA. As far as the essay goes, students ought to have their English teachers and others do a peer edit to make sure they have a hook. Ultimately it is the test scores and GPA that get them through the first computer cut before they will look at the other aspects.

Are you one of the folks in admissions? The ones I spoke to say otherwise.

Do your research on the UF Coalition Application to see for yourself.
