Originally posted by Unregistered View PostAbsolutely agree that they can afford, just look at what they did for lacrosse. Sport specific stadium and facilities. Hired a top coach more that a year in advance of starting to allow her to recruit. Disagree about alumni not having interest. Many do, but soccer is way down the line from FB and BB. Even further down was lacrosse. Do you think UF alumni had an interest in lacrosse? I suspect a huge portion of older alums did not even know it was a NCAA sport. Their own athletic information department was so uninformed that they initially listed the program as playing in the SEC, which has no lacrosse. It comes down to Title IX, as was referenced by a prior poster.

52,179 student in Florida are expected to qualify for the Academic Scholars Bright Futures award that pays for 100% of tuition and $300 of books. 46,216 Florida high school students are expected to qualify for the Medallion level of Bright Futures that covers 75% of tuition.
Most of these Florida seniors will apply to the Big Four Public Universities in Florida just to see if they can get in. There isn't room for the top level Bright Futures students in the combined freshmen class of UF, FSU, UCF and USF. The students need to apply to other colleges in Florida too as safety nets. Many students with over 4.0, 1400, high school Latin takers hoping to attend medical school don't get into UF or FSU. More students are staying in Florida to use the Bright Futures Academic Scholarship according to the article below.

Many will have to accept the reality of Florida Western or Daytona type schools.

True. Good grades, good scores and the right hooks will prevail. Schools want smart student who are also active and socially aware. Good grades and scores only are not enough.

They don’t even check the SAT or GPA as it is a self reported application, and if admitted then at graduation the senior submits the test scores and GPA. As far as the essay goes, students ought to have their English teachers and others do a peer edit to make sure they have a hook. Ultimately it is the test scores and GPA that get them through the first computer cut before they will look at the other aspects.
