Coaches, AD's and Pricipales are sent a form every year asking if they would like to stay or move up divisions. Shame on MB for wanting trophies. Based on the formula they probably do not meet the requirement to move up do to male student population. With that said Private schools population shouldn't effect the scale as they can hand pick student athletes. MB coaching staff new exactly what they had coming in and could have requested the jump even in a off alignment year. To bad the lost to Smithfield will be a blemish and we will never know how they would perform against the likes of SK, NK LaSalle and Hendricken. Next years MB team will come up but won't have they same bite as this team.

That's the problem with Principals in charge - there is an inherent conflict of interest and "principal-agent" (no pun intended) problem. The formula is a joke. Top 2 teams in D2 and D3 and bottom 2 in D1/D2 should swap with the burden on proving why not. The principals have too much of a go along to get along relationship..but sadly with the privates there is not even the oversight you might have at a public district.

Shame because MB could be a contender for D1 and those kids won't be able to challenge for it.

No clue if it’s correct but it might be. Barrington rested all his players and basically trotted out his JV squad including the goalie. It was basically a meaningless scrimmage, and they didn’t care about result.

Exactly my thought..schedule it pre-season then..even if it's JV, what good does it do your JV? Is Barrington JV having cupcakes - doubtful

Non League

You schedule non league opponents early in the summer but sometimes injuries occur or season does not pan out i.e. rain outs push games to close together. This case its both injuries and Barrington played Thursday and will be again Monday for playoff seedings. Which is more important meaningless MB homecoming or league games with playoff implications? Not showing up for MB homecoming would have been worse.

Another advantage the privates enjoy include the kids who parents hold them back a year and repeat 8th grade (because they aren't just ready to start high school). These kids are scattered all over the LaSalle, Hendricken, Moses Brown and Prout teams, and as seniors show up on the All-State teams. Some parents do it back in Kindergarten, but then others do it just the years before High School. Of course, who knows how many of those kids end up getting the accolades or how many of those kids just get their esteem stepped on.

and in the past, RIIL allowed the waivers on 19 yr old and 9th semester eligibility (although in fairness I think one of the examples on the boys' side was a Providence public high school student).

another advantage - the camps run by some of these coaches that just double as early start on the season..oh right, that's the StingRays camp, not the LaSalle soccer team camp the week before the season opens..that strongly hints it's just for HS kids..and is held at LSA..

funny how RIIL worries about "captain's practices" at the school, but not coaches running camps that are essentially early practices (and pay for play).

So who would have thunk that the top teams from Div 1 and 2 (NK and MB) would play a scrimmage today before the playoffs. Obviously someone who doesn't think their players might get hurt. The loser, of course, will not have played their starters.

It's either a potentially stroke of genius if coaches treat like a playoff game and no one gets hurt, or a colossal blunder if someone gets hurt. If neither team takes it seriously what's the point? I hope someone posts the result.

NK should be interesting in playoffs. They had a great regular season but have some flaws that got exposed by LaSalle. If they get by the 8/9 opponent I think they have a huge rivalry game with SK which will be a great game to be at!

Most schools with a bye have some sort of controlled scrimmage. They work on taking and defending set pieces, corner kicks, and PK shootouts. You pick a team from another division that has a bye and has a coach that work with that has a team that can understand the concept. Its better than having internal scrimmages against what is left of your JV. No ground breaking coaching going on here. Happens every year.

I think for some teams without turf fields the difference in playing surfaces exposes either speed, tactical, or skill flaws..but the turf at RIC is a great equalizer. Either NK or SK could win vs LSA or BH on the crappy field; same is true on the girls' side - LSA very tough at home but more suspect on away grass fields. NK is very young team with half the starters or so only sophomores (if roster info is right) - SK could very tough out in the finals.
