Ok you can pull the hard work card ....but if you live in lets say Cumberland why would you go to a NK high school camp? But if i had any interest in going to a private school to get seen by the coach and recruited that is where the difference is. Anyone can go to Lasalle not everyone can go to another public school

RIIL is run very poorly, period. As the article states they draw substantial salaries but do very little to see that the program is run fairly and effectively as to offer opportunities for students to excel academically and at athletics. As a result the ADs and HS coaches have their own agendas and the loss is that of the RI students.

Agree wholeheartedly with first sentence and would love to see individual salaries listed! The rest of the post is kind of foolish. RIIL doesn't offer opportunities for students to excel athletically and academically? What? They run a high school sports league, what opportunities should they offer academically? The AD in the article seems like he's doing something good too. What's your point?

Probably because she has to sit out half the games due to the RIIL transfer rules.

You see the results of (1) a monopoly in terms of providing public school athletic competition (along with RIPCOA); (2) the influence early on in RIIL of the private schools; and (3) the fact that RIIL is run by a handful of principals (although recently allowing a token AD and Supt - and the one Supt was from a school with NO high school!) that by nature have an agenda and just in principle would be subject to claims of bias.

In the past, it was not a big secret that LSA, especially on the boy's side, camps were pseudo summer training sessions (especially the "double" ones the week before the season officially starts). One could argue that town teams have the ability to do "captains practices" that in theory are easier to organize and "manipulate" (the coach who just happens to be running at the same time in the park or driving by). But remember principals get pressure from coaches because camps are $$ makers and a way to get around the "no pay for play" rule on athletics.

In theory, the state should 'bid' out running of athletics to a 3rd party provider or run it on a state level. The MIAA in Mass at least is structured to ensure some geographic and position (AD/Principal) balance, although again, even if you recuse yourself from something specifically about your school, there is still the conflict of interest perception.

But this is RI - RIIl is just another "I know a guy" organization and run (like RIPCOA and those "coaches associations - you know, the ones that mandate your school pays dues for the "privilege' of your student-athletes being considered for ALL-whatever) in that manner.

You'll never solve the private-public school issue as long as you have large privates like BH and LSA - at a minimum, they could mandate participation in the *public* league requires the private school to disclose scholarship aggregates to check there is a proportional balance between athletes and non-athletes (since in theory Nobody gets an "athletic scholarship) - but don't hold your breath.

How does the summer league work? Coaches are coaching players all summer long including incoming 9th graders which serves as a perfect pre-tryout opportunity.

RIIL allows varsity coaches to coach their players once school is out. I think they use the date of June 10. Most of the teams in the summer league are coached by that school's varsity coach. Perfectly ok.
