Futsal - Why are'nt more kids playing in RI?

The below is quoted from a recent presentation by the US soccer director of scouting- DA's are officially adding Futsal to the DA curiculum in a pilot program, officially recognizing the "technical benefits and comfort on the ball"

Quote: ( from Lepore, US Soccer director of scouting)

The key points he made revolved around the priority set for keeping possession and discouraging “an artificial pace” to the game with continuous substitutions.
Also, the addition of Futsal to the schedule in the winter is a new wrinkle, which will be tested in a few markets this season according to Lepore. A couple of Development Academies already use Futsal as part of their program including MLS outfit Sporting Kansas City, which has been a supporter of the indoor game for a long time. The game, especially popular over the years in Brazil, is well known for helping a player’s technical abilities and comfort with the ball.

This is one of the reasons why most RI players are not comfortable with the ball. Why most local clubs are slow to move from a kick and run to a more ball control game. It has changed somewhat in the last 2 years but it is still no where near what it needed to be if RI clubs to going to develop players that can compete with other states. I go to regional and rider and just amazed how the different in skill level of the other state compare to our kids.

geez..maybe because the people in charge are 3,000 miles away?

Little money to be made in futsal..the 5 aside (4 field players) and only 20 minutes is great and I don't disagree with the benefits of futsal..but not the economy of scale outside the young age groups to make it more than a niche.. better clubs do it in their training sessions (small sided, use a futsal ball) but hard to generate interest to do it on the scale that appeals to enough clubs..especially now that you have both WWIS North and South..

Way better off playing futsal at practice. Not much fun having U12 and older kids playing on basketball courts. Way too small, the ball is always going out of bounds and lots of injuries due to the hard floor.

What you have just described are precisely why Futsal don't work in RI. Players are force to make quick decision (which they don't know how to) and control the ball (parents yelling kick the ball on the sideline). Futsal is consider small size game for a reason. The purpose is to teach the players to make quick decision in tight spaces. Develop 1-on-1 and creative skills. If you look at how soccer is play in this country vs other countries skill is a major factor and field vision is what seperate players. I can honestly say, Futsal is not for town clubs because of the lack of quality coaches and players to make the game fun to watch. However, if you ever get a chance to watch Futsal at the elite level it is a wonderful game to watch and more to the American taste of fast and high scores. Too bad RI will always be behind the curve.

i have done futsal for 5 years and see a lot less injuries in futsal than in indoor and very rarely it has anything to do with the floor.
