Hi, my wife and I are just getting familiar with the youth soccer world, our daughter is going to try out for a U8 competitive winter/spring team. Are they real tryouts, or at this age are they essentially just evaluations and most every kid gets placed on a team?

Run from any association or club that has u8 "tryouts." Read US Youth Soccer guidance that at U8, kids should not be on a travel/competitive team, but in a developmental environment that focuses on your child's technical skills.
Some of the premier clubs have academy/junior academy programs or even some town associations now.
Would you base your child's education and teacher at 2d grade on a single, highly variable, standardized test result..or would you prefer them to be immersed in a class with a few good teachers and see how your kid responds first? -
