Does it make money for Soccer RI and compensate coaches, absolutely, but it's purpose is to identify and develop talent, not make money.

Premier teams are there to make money period. If they develop talent, it's to win, become more highly regarded in order to make more money and expand the club's operations.

Big difference. In RI however, ODP spots can be bought because SoccerRI is corrupt.
It looked like there were better players this year at ODP tryouts. Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

All those RI girls can fight for the one regional pool spot that will go to the state this year...RI money subsidizes NY, NJ, MASS that will make the regional pool and travel to Costa Rica

If the name callers had a clue they might understand that ODP begins as a local team to see how well a player can adjust with players they are not familiar with, and some even play positions they don't normally play. Then the top 18 travel to NJ for a friendly tournament where many college coaches begin tracking players, based on how player performs on the field, not the team! Then there is a region camp (summer time) kids from the entire region attend. Boys is held in NJ and the girls is held at URI. The ones if any that shine get asked to advance. It has very little to do with soccer RI they assist with setting things up. The coaches that rate the kids are not local coaches!

So yes any one can try-out but only 18 are asked to attend the tournament

One thing you left out. IN RI ANYONE WHO TRYOUT MAKES THE TEAMS. Years after years, RI-ODP go around begging for players just to field teams for the Jersey trip because most top players do not want to participate due to lack of talents in their pool. In other words they do not seeing themselve going down to Rider and get blown away by almost every other states who lucky enough to draw RI in pool play. The logic you advocate and obvious what RI-ODP preached is why we get kill every year at Rider. Soccer is a team sport and if players play the part college coaches will take notice. Here is what many people on this forum including RI-ODP forget, college coaches recruit players who best fit their system. Yes, fast and strong are some attributes coaches want and look for. But most good coaches look for players the have high soccer IQ, field vision, technical and tactical skills, leadership, and other qualities that would improve their team in the long run. Also coaches want to see good product on the field. Based on our track record we have yet to put a product worthy of any coaches attention. Think about it. If you are a coach would you rather watch NJ vs MD or RI vs NY (where you already know the outcome)? Or if you are scouting a player on the NY team you would rather wait until he or she compete against better competition so you can better evaluation the player against players with comparable ability.

I agree with your ODP observations, but you are hinting towards the idea that D1 college coaches are looking for finesse over speed and strength. Have you seen many D1 college soccer games? Physical presence and speed counts for an awful lot in every game I have seen, and that includes BC, Northeastern, PC, and their opponents from up and down the east coast.

Thanks Carla - it's a complete sham. Take from a parent whose kid was in for a number of years.

Most good kids quit after they go to NJ and play with a bunch of teammates that can't even dribble - nothing like sheer humiliation among other talented players to make you quit real quick.

Too bad, it sounds like its about the individual player, not the team. So if kids are supposedly quitting because their teammates suck comes down lack of direction on the parents part

I dont think girls quit the program because they lose at Rider.

The camp is what it is really about. Participating in ODP in RI is just to prepare the girls for the camp and to identify the girls the coaches want to recommend for the pool. Rider is just an opportunity for the region 1 evaluators to confirm the coaches recommendations, no one cares if they win

Maybe they drop out because they realize that against the region 1 top talent, they dont stack up, so why waste time and money

                  Too bad

                    Idiot comment.

It's a parent's fault when they have a player that wants more in their soccer career and SoccerRI puts kids on the team that can't even make the varsity team at their town high school?

Seriously, if you expect to play at a Regional or National level, you better have a fire under your ass about competing and winning. Some sappy con job parent speech to their kid after being humiliated in 100 degree weather doesn't fly if the player is a competitor.

You people on this board are as crazy as loons.

First, you are posting here you must be a loon as well?

I don't understand what is so hard to realize, its not about the ODP team they look to see the players on the team and how each player stacks up against the competition. If little Johnny is running circles around the field and dominating his position a recruiter may begin to track him and follow his progress
