    2012-13 odp

I predict miserable outcomes for ODP this year based on a couple issues:

    1. Practice location - who wants to drive to Burrellville at 5 p.m. every Wednesday.

    2. Diluted player pool - still weak representation at all levels - best thing RIODP could do is decide they won't field teams at certain ages because there's not enough skilled players. The next year, the best players may actually flock back.

    3. Elimination of winter training - these teams need as much help as they can get

4.Tryout/program fees - You want the best kids, send them a note that says come try out for the team, if you make it we'd be honored to have you playing for RI at a nominal fee to cover cost (not profit) of coach and uniform ($200 tops).

This a blatant money grab and until they show that the development comes before ensuring additional paid coaching gigs are maintained, it will continue to decline in talent and competitiveness.

Our daughter had a positive experience at all levels of ODP this year. Communication/organization was fine. Quality coaching at both indoor and outdoor training. They were competitive in the Regional in NJ & posted a winning record and could have won all the games they played. Camp at URI was worth the the entire year fee itself, college level coaches, individual training and great competition. Even though we have only been involved for short period of time, I have & will continue to recommend ODP to others.

          Thanks Carla!

How many of these great experiences turned into pool selections - not!

Many of the folks I know involved this year agree with OP and aren't coming back - at least at the older age groups.

You need real quality coaches to keep the older kids. Someone who can give them a different experience, not necessarily better but different than their club coach. If that coach can teach them to see things a bit differently they will come back and be better for it.

We tried it a couple years ago, but price was exorbitant. Coaches were decent. But for those driving up from southern RI and Newport, the Burrillville/Glocester fields are just not easy access. They've significantly dropped the price, so that provides half the solution. Need a location somewhere between NK and Warwick, close to 95.

You apparently haven't got a clue, its not the ODP's reason there weren't many more pool selections, that would rest with the clubs and players abilities. Many sit on this site and preach how great their kid and teams are yet low pool selections? If you use the my kid is to good you really sound like a moron.

ODP uses local coaches to start training and help the teams gel together, much of the skill is and success is brought by the players themselves. No coach can expect to take a team with all new players to the top with very limited practices, yet many of our teams did OK in NJ. That is where many recruiters gather and if you had the common sense to talk to any of them you would realize they are looking at individual players and how they match up against the opposing competion, not how well the team does as a whole,

RI players did attract the attention of a number of recruiters. In that regard, the money we spent on ODP was well worth it.

Also the summer camp is run by the region one head coach not the local coaches.....

Makes sense. All the best players in RI play for Bayside so it stands to reason that the RI ODP teams be made up of all Bayside kids.
