Any town clubs entering MAPLE to challenge their kids?

Just wondering if there are any towns entering MAPLE in the Fall? I see Portsmouth did it last year at U12, maybe that's why they won SC. Should other towns emulate?

Giving the restrictions SuperLiga places on premier players I would see why not. Most town teams are 2-4 players away from being competitive. If you get lucky like Portsmouth and recruit couple good players and like minded parents you have a strong enough team to compete for SC.

Not sure I understand. If you are playing in MAPLE then who cares what Superliga's rules are? The four town rule is an SRI rule U14 and under. So if you have a real good young team made up of one or two towns, it shouldn't be that hard to attract 3 or four players from 2 other towns. Parents always want their kids on the best team they can afford to be on, so if you promote yourself correctly and do all the right things the word will get out and you'll find the players. Besides the huge advantage Premier teams have over town programs though, there is one advantage seldom talked about on here. A kid can join a premier team and challenge themselves at a higher lever and still be rostered on their town competitive team to play with their friends. This happens a lot at the younger ages, U13 and under. If a town team playing in a premier league recruits some players from out of town, those kids cannot also be rostered on their town's Superliga team. If that rule was changed it would be easier for town teams to recruit for young premier level teams that would save parents tons of $$

Not sure about you but typically the coaching in town isn't great! You would save $$$ but where would you be at the end of the day. Your kid is playing better competition but are they developing with a town coach who really has no proper training. All depends on what level you want your kid to be at.

They won because they have a coach who knew what it takes to construct a team. Just picking good players will not always work. A better test way of doing it is go to a good tournament and take 3 premier level players with you as guest players. See how it goes, if the team works better, if there is good chemistry and then take the next step if you wish.

Premier teams do not really enjoy playing premier in name only teams just because a coach thinks it will be good for their team and it could end up being as bad an experience as it could be a good one.

Easier recommendation -- Make SuperLiga Anchor at U12 and up an open division freed of any premier and community rule restrictions. Do not allow premier players into SL Gold and enforce the community rule at classic gold and below. Make that division the only qualifying RI league for State Cup.

                Good idea!

That is the best idea I've ever heard on this site. So simple. And it makes good sense.

Unfortunately that discussion goes back to the days of RIYSA and the pre premier discussions that led to premier. Associations all get to vote on this stuff as i remember. The smaller weaker associations feared they would be gobbled up by the stronger ones. I could go on but it all led to the system we have now.

I also do not believe premier players should play in the bottom 2 Superliga divisions. I do believe that all Superliga games should be played on Saturdays so more kids could do both. We then would get stronger premier teams as well as stronger Superliga anchor teams which would lead to better soccer in the state. But don't try to get this through OD's head, he likes his empire just the way it is.

Great history lesson... Can you shed some light so we can better undertand the state of youth soccer in RI? Why the gospel according to Oscar has currupted us all. This love hate relation between town and premier is killing youth soccer.

Massachusetts has had town on Saturday and premier on Sunday for years and their town programs are doing just fine. Oh and how about the no practice on Wednesdays rule for premier teams for the kids who choose to do ODP. Mind you many of the ODP players are town kids because many prefer their premier team to doing ODP and cannot justify the added expense. We have all kinds of protection rules in our state, but we work around them and as long as the kids are happy it is functioning at some below optimum level.

Maple is a joke.....Bayside, Blackwatch, Lusitania, Tidal Wave, Rams ect....... parents pay a lot to watch an expensive game of Kickball with the occasional decent play by the one or two kids with talent. I have followed this site for a while and read all the bashing, truth is there is no team that is consistently beating their opponents. Most games are usually close unless a team is missing the one or two kids that carry the team, (check the results). The coaching is average at best, some clubs appear better over a long period, they usually have better recruiting! Get a decent coach that the kids like with a team that is playing decent, recruit the coach and the team will follow!! Does this really make your club better than another? Not really! Its perception, this usually comes with a fee increase for the parents to cover the added expense of the new coach!

The competition for U12 boys next year is getting fierce. either that age group is going to be very watered down or it will produce some excellent players from all the competition. One of the strongest age groups in the state it will be interesting to watch over the next few years.
