I am appalled, dismayed and disappointed at some of the comments that are made here.

I am a former coaching instructor at a pretty high level and can tell you that I know many different educational soccer curriculums around the world and I can say that not one person on this site really knows what they are talking about. I just hope that the children that play the game are not reading this.

I can't believe that parents even come on this site to post and I saw where some actually have their names posted. I wasn't going to post myself but feel that I have too because I am so upset by reading these comments. We always try to tell coaches that #1 is to develop players but you have parents coming on here saying its about wins and losses and putting the ball in the back of the net. If a coach that ever attended a license class promoted this, I can tell you that they would be sent home immediately. I did read where someone said, let's try to teach and play the right way and that is really what needs to be taught.

People promoting a direct style of play. Just for the record, that's what we try not to teach our coaches. We have tried to employ a more european style of play of passing and proper movement of the ball and playing out of the back. This site is talking about how kick and chase is ok and how a team can be successful with this approach. Wrong!!! Wins and losses are not to be a concern at this age but proper teaching and proper style of play is much more important. Yes, a direct style is successful at times
but not really what we want to teach or we will never be a force on the international stage.

I read some of the other links and I really can't believe this. I really thought it was a joke when this person sent me this link to review. It's probably the most negative and deplorable site I have ever read. Please for the sake of the kids, please stop this nonsense. You are ruining the game for your children. It's supposed to be about fun and proper development and promoting this great game!! Instead people are joking and making it a game of winning at all costs and robbing your kids of a great experience. 99% will never be a top college or professional player.

Lastly, I did read one where the person was providing a game recap and a lot of the soccer terminology was completely wrong and to say they like to play a kick and run style is not an appropriate style of play to teach our youth. Outside backs don't make overlapping runs, they make runs up the flanks. I also read somewhere where someone was describing the offside rule incorrectly. It's when the ball is passed/played when the player is determined to be in an offside position. If you are going to post, please have the correct information. People then watch games and then dispute calls because they read something on this site from someone who truly doesn't know the game or the rules.

State Cup is a great event, don't cheapen the tournament by coming on this site and bashing and being negative about teams and coaches. We just hope they are trying to teach the kids the proper way to play this wonderful game and don't profess to be an expert and not know what you are talking about. Have fun and good luck to all the teams and please enjoy the experience!!
        Thanks Carla!

Game has evolved a bit as about 10-15 years ago the term was "boot it".

I shouldn't have come on this site.

An overlapping run is any run around the backside of another player. That's it, it's not that hard to understand.

Do outside backs or defenders make these runs? In today's game, yes, all the time.

The outside back either overlaps the outside midfielder, or a wing forward most of the time.

Anyone who tells you otherwise really has no idea what they are talking about. Overlapping has to do with the act of running around the back of another player to get into the space that's there. It has nothing to do with the position that player plays.

Is it possible that the objective of this overlapping run is to get the ball to a striker that can score, or is the objecitve just to make the run and look good doing it?

Overlapping runs are used to disrupt the defense, get an additional number into the attack, or take advantage of space.

It's just another way of running off the ball.

...and of course ultimately leads to a goal, if done correctly

If your paying club prices you'd expect you could beat a town team no matter how good they are. Nefc and Scorpions have hundreds of kids to choose from.

Agreed, but not sure I would say hundreds in each age bracket. This is their third tier team. People see scorpion and stars name and they think it is automatically great, this is not the case. There are not that many great scorpion teams so a third team ain't gonna be that good!
