That's not as optimal for the JV kids, but the JV game shouldn't be as much about winning in contrast to the Varsity game and perhaps you are right in that the JV should have fewer matches.

Second, there are dozens of parents, maybe even you, who have kids doing extra-curricular stuff or do some traveling for their club team on a regular basis each week -- and know how their kids spend the down/travel time. I've seen the 3-4 players when it's my turn to drive the carpool alternate from rapid texting and gossiping to each silently reading a book or studying notes. Harder on a bus -- absolutely, but what do you think happens when they go to college and have to manage their time independently (even if they don't play on an athletic team)?

Finally, you are only talking about 8-9 away games so smart coaches have already talked to their players ahead of time about the schedule and "coaching" them a bit on how to manage their school load. I'm not sure if RI schools do this, but in last school district we lived in, the in-season fall and spring athletes basically had last period as monitored study hall.
You don't know what you talking about. Here's how it works. If the field you are playing on has lights then the JV game goes first and Varsity plays second, under the lights. If the field does not have lights, Varsity goes first and JV plays until there isn't any light. If it is a home game the kids show up at the predetermined time, away games involve a bus ride there and for most an bus ride back. It is not the coaches responsibility to "coach" high school age kids in time management. As a good parent it is your responsibility to coach time management. The coaches responsibility is to win games.

As far as the JV using the varsity game as an instruction tool - that never happens. Typically the JV coach is also the assistant coach. He hangs with the varsity team during that game. The JV squad "watches" most of the game and then warms up for the last 1/2 hour of the varsity game.

Athletes in RI do not get special school schedules. I can't imagine how that could be done.

That's an answer I hear frequently in RI -be it high school soccer or SRI club soccer - can't be done here although it's done in other states in the school system or state soccer associations.

Coaches and ADs can control order of games - that's merely a scheduling issue. If they want to do it based on lights, so be it --but there's no state mandate as far as I know that it has to be done a certain way.

Also, there's no mandate as far as I know to have 2 people on the sideline, especially when the "assistant" often adds no value in terms of coaching. What I have seen, in a couple of high school programs in other states, are relationships where the JV coach essentially "scouts" the opposing team (what formation, how the other team does restarts, etc.) with the JV players watching and commenting. At half time, the

You are right that it is not the coaches' responsibility to teach time management -- it's also not necessarily the coaches' job to be a good role model, foster character development, or care about the player's status in the classroom. I guess the job description is winning and basic player safety/conduct -- but think about the best coaches you had and what them great to you.

Oh, and my kids are not in HS yet, but in middle school they have an "enrichment" (I guess the modern term for study hall?) if they are not in a music, etc. My nephew in HS in VA has a free period where kids involved in extra-curricular stuff can meet (clubs), kids taking on-line college course can do their thing (independent study), and athletes can do conditioning or study (alternates).

Maybe they just have more imagination in other states...or the academic rigor and standards are so much greater in RI..

Coach would come over and speak about what he observed and then go back.

These are smaller school programs so a good number of the JV kids were going to play Varsity (and there was no football), but I would think even in RI there are some programs where the V/JV/Middle school coaches at least try to do some collaboration.

Eastern division is very weak, seriously watched a couple teams ridiculous except for maybe two to three good players on each team.

                      Middle School schedule is

                      1 Nov (opening round)

                      3 Nov (Q-finals)

                      7 Nov (Semi)

9 Nov (Title match) @ Gaudet MS (assume the turf field)

Teams have not been seeded as I think a few games are still scheduled as late as Friday so pairings won't be officially made until this Sunday.

Is Portsmouth really scrimmaging CC today as RIPCOA shows? Seems odd that 2 # 1 seeds and potentially semi/finalists would do at this point heading into the post-season, especially risking injuries.

Not to mention the millions of dollars of potential lost advertising revenues.
