On the girls' side, the issue has not reached the same level of debate as it has with the boys, but it is still a big presence for the elite players in the country. And it comes with a mixed bag of opinions.

"High school can offer stuff that we cannot in club in terms of playing in front of peers," said KCFC Technical Director Huw Williams. "I am okay with that break, but ask me again in June, and I may say otherwise."

With ECNL out of the USYS National Championships, it will be only be a matter of when, not if, on the girls side too..

      FALL ALIGNMENTS
On a motion made and seconded, the Committee unanimously approved (11-0) the following fall sports alignments for two (2) years: Football, Field Hockey, Girls’ Tennis, Boys’ Soccer and Boys’ & Girls’ Cross Country.

Girls’ Volleyball and Girls’ Soccer fall sports alignments were tabled until the March meeting.

I don't see the actual new alignments though.

Interesting to read between the lines of some of the coaches on top DA/ECNL clubs -- high school is more of a "social" opportunity now for soccer..

On the boys' side, the debate is about how to build a competitive senior men's team. Everyone is dancing around this but the real problem isn't high school soccer, but rather college soccer (short fall season, lots of games, few practices, coaches have to win to keep their jobs, etc.). So, the people who are using the DAP as a way to gain entry to college soccer are corrupting the program from its original intent. When 19 year olds are spending their time studying Geology 101 instead of practicing their craft on the soccer field, they fall permanently behind their peers everywhere else in the world, and they stop being "elite" by any possible definition.

The problem is, I want my kids to go to college because that is more likely to offer a secure future although for a very small minority they might hit the big time playing soccer (but in Europe, not MLS).

Difficult for a atate wide tournament for soccer versus basketball for small schools to compete. It's a numbers game. A small school can compete in a sport where you only put 5 players on the court at one time. Tougher when you've got to put 11 players on a field.

Simple..eliminate the geographical breakouts..everyone plays each other in the Division once.

Winner is declared the RI Division State Champ.

Take the savings in games and make a 16 team tourney. 8 from D1, 4 from DII/III.

                1st Rd - 1 v 8, 2 v 7, etc in D1; 1 v 4, 2 v 3 in DII/III

2d Rd - Reseed remaining teams 1 through 8 using a formula that factors in opp records, home versus away wins OR make it an event and throw all 8 teams in a hat and pick them randomly to assign "seed"..

Semi/finals just follow from results of Q-finals and whatever method to determine seeds.

Let the non-playoff teams use their "saved" games to schedule an end of the season rivalry or other game against any other non-playoff team..or take the savings from less games.
