Can't believe there isn't a thread on the awful state of this program and the joke coaches they have employed. It's sad that kids from premier teams in other state's sole goal for the season is to make their ODP team. Here in RI if you parents volunteer you're in. Pathetic.

Are you referring to a certain age group? Because it sounds to me like you also may be just a jilted parent who's kid didn't get selected. There was a huge turn-out this year so a lot of kids got cut...

RI ODP is a joke, but it's not really RI's fault, the entire program is a dinosaur and needs to be replaced. On the boys side it's relevance is nonexistent, and the top girls stopped playing a while back at the state level.

I do agree that RI ODP needs significant improvement. That said, I am thinking that one of the primary issues with ODP is cost. On the assumption that 80% of the best players registered with SRI play on a premier team. RI ODP has to justify the cost.
If a player's premier fees are between 2,000 and 4,000 (including travel, etc...).
The player trains 2 - 3x weekly, for 9 - 10 months with arguably better, but at least equal coaches to ODP. The player plays consistently with and against better competition than ODP. The player attends College Showcase tournaments for visibility, then why would a player's parents pay another $700 - $1,200 for RI ODP to train once per month and attend two tournaments and maybe a camp?
It feels like economics? What are the costs associated to field an ODP team? How much money is SRI making? Can the fees come down to attract more players? Just curious..

$1,400 a year to have kids standing around to watch coaches justify their coaching licenses by introducing the most complicated and coordinated drills to the kids who are simply struggling to do the basics like step-overs.
If they decided to not have a team in certain age groups because they aren't talented enough to compete, you might see some of the better kids come back. They don't do that, they just take whoever is willing to pay or parents kiss ass/volunteer. You do ODP to play with the best kids and hopefully they make you look better - the Ryder College tournament was an embarrassment for all RI teams last year.

RI ODP is 23 parents paying for possibly 1 kid who may get ID'd. Sometimes it's 22 paying for 2. You have to be exceptional to get noticed if you are from Maine, NH, VT, Mass or RI as most of the ID coaches at ID camp are from CT and below and they see those kids in the other states all year long, not just for ID week.
If the cost justifies the training with the coach you have then ODP is worthwhile.
If you are paying in the hopes of getting ID'd you are wasting your money.
Before your kids go to ID week your local ODP coaches know who they are going to promote.
Your RI ODP coaches do not promote all kids from your RI ODP age group - only 1 or 2 at best.
But they do need the money from the 24 in each age group to keep the program alive.
Visa or Mastercard?

BTW the only reason they had more kids come out this year is because there was no tryout fee so every kid came out - talent wasn't any better just more kids.

Cost is crazy
The cost for ODP went up by $200 for EACH player this year with the new director in charge. I would LOVE to see an explanation for THAT! As if it weren't bad enough before, they priced themselves right out of recruitment of potential quality players. The scholarships are a joke now ... they offer 10-20% discount only now to talented kids who are living well below the poverty level and could be a great asset to the team. WASTE of time.

The new director will do some great things. But then again, any improvement from the past director will be considered great.
I've got two kids who play premier and town soccer.
One wouldn't go back to ODP simply because "they were teaching cones how to kick a ball." That was his quote!
My other kid finally tried out this year and made the team. The coaches are nice enough but I couldn't justify the money.
I'll spend the $1200 that ODP was going to rip from my wallet on a good shrink so I can figure out why we spend so much time/money on soccer!!!

ODP needs to be free for all those that make the team. It needs to be financed by all member clubs of each state. ODP should be a bonus for a family that has a talented kid, not a burden.
As it stands right now ODP is an over-glorified expensive clinic. The best players in the state are not attending.
There are so many problems with the ODP system that it will take a major overhaul to make the thing actually work.

But mostly the reason RI will struggle is the kids don't play for strong club programs early enough, so as the 16-18 get older, they will be relatively speaking worse every year for this experience.
