What are most Premier Teams doing in the Winter?

Are Premier Teams just playing Soccer in the winter just to say they play? Are they doing the correct training to better their players over the winter or do they enter their teams in any league to just satisfy the parents desire to see them play.

By winters end, the Premier Teams should all be better than when they began the winter season since they have had 20 weeks of training and playing...or are they the same as when they entered the winter season.

Really what should they be doing throughout the winter I hear it all the time when spring comes around that our kids are not ready to play outdoors yet? Why...what are the coaches not doing during the winter.

Not sure what you're getting at with this question...but i can tell you personally that my 3 kids play indoor soccer because they think it's fun. They like playing games, being on a team and competing. So what if indoor soccer - boarded or non-boarded - is theoretically not good training for outdoor soccer. If the kids want to play indoors, let 'em.

They go to practice, too, but I can tell you that they don't look forward to practice as much as games. Again, I'm only speaking for my 3 kids.

I do know that many premier clubs play futsal in the winter. Again, my own experience is that my kids hate futsal. The ball goes out of bounds to much, the ball is dead...they tell me it's boring. They'd rather play in an indoor league. Yes, I know futsal is supposed to be good training, but you can't make them like it.

At some point we've got to take a hard look at this whole training, training, training, mantra and see if it's turning kids off to the game. I mean, does everything in youth soccer have to revolve around the .01% of kids that might make the US National Team?

What would be ideal is for someone to build a full-sized domed soccer field like they have in New Hampshire :) I nominate Soccer-RI to do so.

As a team we take 6 weeks off in the winter and begin training after the new years, which is nice because I know my kids are run down and their bodies need the rest. I hear it all the time on the sidelines from other parents that their kids play basketball for their school, a town team, and yes even another travel team. These parents are nuts either they were never good athletes themselves growing up and feel they need to live through their kids.

I played Futsal overseas as a kid (Dad was stationed over seas) and yes I hated it at first much like JB says his kids do, but i hated it because I was not good enough to play it. My skill set as a player had to adjust to a cleaner softer touch on and off the ball, instead of knocking it down the field. I played 3 years of Futsal growing up and my skill set was so far more advanced because of it, when I returned home to the States my skills were much further ahead of my old friends whom were much better than I was when Ileft 3 years prior.

Our club does not do play Futsal I wish they did, sometimes to become better at things you need to do things you do not like to do...this is what makes some kids better than others. I went off to play D1 Soccer at College and I our it to playing Futsal still to this day.

That's great! If you want your kids to play futsal -- sign them up for futsal! The beauty is ...it's your choice as a parent.

As far as the kids who play for 3 basketball teams....you ever consider that maybe the kids in question just like to play basketball games? Maybe their parents are perfectly sane and maybe their parents played D1 basketball?

Most school basketball teams carry way too many kids to give everyone meaningful playing time. I think it's a great idea to supplement school teams with a travel team or 2. What's the alternative -- keeping them home to play video games?

What the "insane, non-athlete" parent's kids do with their time isn't up to you...or me, either.

I just had the same conversation with my wife the other night it would be nice to have a break for our own kids sake. We are just playing for the sake of playing because that is what we as parents expect. It is easier for a coach just to sign them up and have indoor games and a practice once a week rather than training them for a specific goal.

I hear the same thing from parents who have their kids playing on 2-3 basketball teams and their parents begging for more. 9 times out of 10 they are dads who are little in stature and look like they want to be athletic but are not at all, thus living through their own kids and not ever really recognizing it.

I do enjoy watching my kids skills improve and become better players instead of having the kid who can run fast and kick the ball when it comes to them. My kids were like that a while ago and have transitioned into fast well skilled kids who, frankly can play almost any position because they have a better touch than most kids. With that said it was all their hard work to become better and I have enjoyed seeing the results of their hard work.

At BWP we play Futsal, it is an in-house league. At first I did not like watching it and my son hated to play but as the winter went on his skills became so much better and the game became so much more exciting because every kid on the field improved so much.

I actually look forward to Futsal with BWP because I see the results with not just my kids but with how the team improves overall.

JB is right. Futsal can be fun and is a good game to learn skills but it does not replace real soccer. some clubs like BWP play futsal cause of their training facilities are in gym on a hard court, you try and keep control of a soccer ball on a fast hard court it’s not fun. I think WWIS is the best option for RI, board less with field turf so you can use cleats a little narrow but not that bad. I would love to see them open it up so field 1 and 2 were one and play 10v10. I know they will charge an arm and a leg but would be nice to see.

Poster #5. You and your kids sound awesome!

Our team plays outside until it is impossible. typically 2-3 times a week. There will be two winter tournaments and one indoor session.

That Wide World is such a wonderful place My Sons U10 team trains in there and this was my first time there...very impressed. So many kids that play there, it brings the game into perspective. I always thought my son was a very good player. That night there was a boy 9-10 years old who was playing there and was he really good. I was not sure what team he played on so I could not get his name, he had a mohawk and could he play. Just watching him for the short time I realized my son really needs to work on so many different areas of his game to become a better player. Just being at Wide World our kids can play amongst their own team on those cold winter days, instead of playing in a cold gym.

Let them play and encourage them to learn on their own

As an 18 year veteran of high level prep school coaching let me encourage you to do a few of things.

                    1) If your children want to play, be it indoor, futsal, etc. let them and allow them to express their creativity. The reasons that the South American countries and African countries are creating so many competent pros in this day and age is because their kids grow up playing games in the streets and dirt lots across their countries. No coaches, their own rules, and no pressure other than from their friends. It helps produce more creative and skilled players.

                    2) Letting them play in the winter is also good for the mental aspect in terms of creating a stronger competitive mind. BUT don't wear them out and don't push them away from other sports as this is good cross-training and mental preparation too. I just had a Division I coach on the phone the other day and he was inquiring about two underclassmen and his first question was about what other sports they played. After I answered I inquired as to why he asks this question. He responded that he likes kids who play more than one sport because they are more mentally diverse, more competitive, and tend to incur less RMI's (Repetitive Motion Injuries).

                    3) Get you children started in the Standards Project, especially players 16 and under. Here's the website: http://www.thestandardsproject.org/
The more skilled we can make our American players the better the future for them and our sport's success. I have all my underclassmen working on it from December until pre-season in late August.

My sons team practices 3 x a week 2 technical/tactical and one fitness at wide world. We love WWIS warm plenty of space to bring my work food for my other children whom we drag along. Parking seems to be a issue. But clean and I quite yes i said quite.

Nature can recover or adapt easily enough.

We are potentailly rather screwed. Bear in mind that most of our wonderfully polluting industry is located in low lying areas which are likely to be flooded. That ought to stop us doing any further harm, even if it is a bit too late.
