    ODP in RI

I been hearing mixed messages about the value of ODP in RI. Does anyone know the real deal?

ODP for ages U14 and younger is mostly extra training sessions. Games are minimal and meaningless, though a given RI ODP team may play in a tournament or 2.

At the very young ages, U11 and U12, everyone makes the team. So, it comes down to - do you want to spend money for training above and beyond your town/club team?

          What's next

At u-14 and higher the RI ODP has a team pool and those who make the team (pay the price) train with the goal of making the Ryder Cup team at the end of the year were they will drive down to New Jersey to get pounded by superior ODP programs that draw from bigger talents pools. Then they will be invited to URI to attend id camp with kids from all over region one for 7 days. The goal is to make the center field and hopeful catch someone's eye for a chance to train with the Region 1 pool who then picks a team to play the other three regions for a chance to make the national pool that gets to play world cup style competetions starting at U-15. Can't rememeber the last RI girl to make regional or national pool but there has been a couple of boys in recent years.

There are A few girls from RI in regional pool right now. A 97, a 96, a few 95's and few others. There is also a 95 in national pool and I think one other. Say what you want about ODP, but it's a different set of coaches (most of them pretty good, some of them great) looking at your kid from a different point of view than their club or town competitive coach. They may get to play a position they never get to play (that never hurt anyone) and so what if they play other states and get beat up. If all you want to do is win all the time, than stay in Superliga and face mediocre to poor competition. That will never improve your game. If you want to put your kid up against some of the best players in the region and really improve their game then ODP is for you. Regional Camp is optional and most of the big travel tournaments (like england and costa rica) are optional if you get selected. My kid plays at one of the highest levels of any club team in RI and she still loves ODP. If you're up in the air about ODP I'd suggest you go to tryouts and see what its all about. You'll see some of the best kids in the state all trying out for the same team. Yes, of course their are some subpar players there, but I've been to tryouts all over RI and Southern MA with my kids and I've never seen the level of talent at one tryout that I've seen at ODP tryouts. And if you don't think that good players learn and improve by playing with other good players and against even better players then you don't know JACK!!!

My daughter has not attempted ODP but that's what I've been thinking. Playing with different high level players and having coaches with a different point of view has to be a good thing.

ODP ... the organization where 23 people pay for the 1 who has a chance to be noticed.
