M. for LaSalle is not that hard to stop on a high school team. Take your best defender and mark her. Double her if she gets the ball. She scored nearly all the goals for LaSalle which either means that she doesn't like to share or the other forwards are not good finishers. Either way, not hard to do IMO.
Typically the All State selections are pretty good/fair, though I have seen a few political selections.

Seems to me that back and middle wins championships on that level as apparent from the 1-0 scores in last couple of finals.[/QUOTE]
As for the championships, I disagree. Lets look at the state championship games:
D1 LaSalle scored 74 points and gave up 10 while EG scored 71 and gave up 12 over the regular season. WIth one player scoring almost all of their goals, LaSalle won 1-0. Pretty even match up, but the high scorer prevailed, even though EG had 2 players that had scored double digit goals on the season, but they were shut down.
D2 EWG scored 71 and gave up 20 while Lincoln scored 47 and gave up only 8, which is one of the strongest defensive performances in RI. With 4 players that had double digit goals on the season, EWG won 2-1, so the strong defense failed to shut down the scoring drive from a team that gave up the most goals of any team in the state championship games. Lincoln had one player with double digit goals.
D3 Narragansett scored 64 and gave up 14 while Middletown scored 64 and gave up 10. Like the D1 teams, these teams wera almost exactly identical in their regular season performance, but Narr had 4 plyers with double digit goals, while Midd only had 2.
Looking at these 3 games, it does not appear that strong defense wins soccer games.

I am talking about good teams and good competition and D1 is as close as you are going to get outside of good premier teams. You cannot compare gansett or any of the other teams for that matter with any of the teams that were in semis in D1. Look at M's premier team. They made it to the national championships. She scored a bunch of goals leading up to the final game. They lost in the finals...what was the score...you guessed it 1-0. Notre Dame just won college cup. Score? Hmmm 1-0. Need I say more?

THe reason that the Scorpions lost 1-0 in the finals is becuase the other team had a strong defense? No--the other team's offense was more powerful than the Scorpions'.

Notre Dame beat Stanford because they played a stronger offensive game. Offense is the reason teams win. Obviously the best teams play a strong defense as well, but it would have been a tie at 0-0 if ND had not put on a better offensive showing.

Boy you are stubborn. Put it this way. They had other very capable forwards who could have played and scored against Lasalle and actually have in the past and the other girls could have played where they did the first time!

This comment is way off base. First of all you do win with defense in soccer. Every game starts 0-0 and all you need is one goal and then shut them down to win. Which is what there are so many 1-0 wins in the upper level. If your defense is crappy and you let in 3 goals you are NOT going to score 4 goals to win against a quality team
As far as fat and least talented, that may hold true in rec or the early years but these kids drop out early. In Elite soccer your modern day fully back has to be quick with great footskill and often plays like a attacking winger.
To build a winner you start from the goalie on out, then your defense, then your two center mids, then LM and RM and lastly your striker(s)

These isn't 1 single answer to this concept. And it is so obvious I can't understand why there would be any argument either way.
Weak D + Weak O = lose all games
Strong D + Weak O = tie or lose more games than you win
Weak D + Strong O = tie or lose more games than you win
Strong D + Strong O = win more games than you lose or tie.
