One slight modification to this. If the foul is in the box and the player made no attempt whatsoever to play the ball, for example holding, pulling, pushing and handball, it will still be
a red card even though the foul was in the box. Fouls attempting to play the ball in the box are only a yellow card (in addition to the PK) where fouls attempting to play the ball outside the box are a red card because a free kick outside the box isn't considered enough punishment for the offense.

A good example of this is Saurez in the 2010 world cup against Ghana where he batted the ball away with his hands on the goal line. He got a red card and Ghana got the PK.

Also, to the earlier post the attacker does not have to be past the last defender for DOGSO to be called. But that is usually the case as if there are multiple defenders between the attacker and the goal it isn't as "obvious" a goal scoring opportunity in most cases. In the case of Saurez there were multiple defenders there but it was obvious the ball was going to go in if not for his purposeful handling.

yeah but it kills me that a free kick is awarded when smaller players go to ground on obvious shoulder-to-shoulder collisions where the ball is being played. most prevalent on pre-HS big field U13/U14.

I also find it funny when parents in the stands seem to think they can see something better than the refs on the field. They will scream "That was all ball!" from the other side of the field when the ref is literally 10ft away from the play.

The best is when you play teams from other parts, California, Texas and Florida, use to love to chat to the other parents, even though they hated us, NYCFC has that affect on people. I would always degrade their state, but in a very subtle way, the only parents that caught me were the Tophat Kunts, which is a self-fulfilling destiny....

How any parent, player, or coach for that matter who isn't an AR can properly judge if a play is truly offside is beyond me.

Yes, sometimes the referee simply can not see a handball if it is made. Sometimes the referee is blocked by another player, sometimes the referee is completely behind the player and cant see a handball and/or any foul.

Sometimes the referee will yell "play on" if the opposing team gained advantage from a foul made on them as its their right to do so...Referees have the power of GOD on the field...It is part of the game.

let the refs ref, let the coaches coach, let the kids play....and most importantly STFU!!!!

I spent my playing days mostly in or around the center of the pitch. 99% of the refs were really good people and if you treated them with respect, they'd have a conversation or two with you during a downtime. We are all people. You start to get to know them after a while, which can't hurt.

If I saw a call one way, and they another, nothing immediately needs to be said. They ain't changing it. But, during those quiet times I'd ask them straight up "Why'd you call that play that way?" Far more often then not, they'd tell you why. That's good enough for me. If I saw it one way, and they another, that doesn't make me any more right than they are. But, tie goes to the one with the whistle, and I was OK with it. Maybe it buys you a call later...

Sometimes, they'd be honest and say "I didn't see it" for a lack of a call. Now, if they are in position and their view was blocked...what can I say? Be better at physics?

When a ref acts like they are superior to everyone else and comes across with a "who douth question me?" approach...I'd get a little heated...I admit....

To be fair, I've definitely seen refs call an offside because they somehow didn't see a defender on the other side of the field who was deeper than the offensive player. But generally agree with your comment, especially on fields where there are no bleachers or place where parents have an elevated view of the field.

Smaller and weaker players get knocked off the ball all the time with a shoulder tackle or toe poke and go to the ground. Parents call for fouls when there isn't one. Teqch your kid about balance and leverage and keep quiet when your player gets out muscled.
