Track and cross-country will help with endurance. Basketball or lacrosse will help with the spacing and passing. However, they should play whichever sport they enjoy the most, and are most likely to stick with. Track is probably the sport that will yield the biggest improvement on a soccer field.

Oh my God, people! This is a marathon, not a sprint. Possibly the most important thing is to guard against burnout!! Have your kid do whatever they enjoy!
My son is in high school and is a top player. He plays ultimate frisbee in the spring. The marginal difference running track will make (if it even does) wont offset the lack of FUN if your kid isn't in love with track.
