I have always felt NYCSL's implementation of NPL is very flawed in that it rewards teams for just being part of a club and dilutes the NPL brand in our area.
I much prefer EDP's approach which is to confer NPL status to member clubs that meet standards but you only qualify when your team is in D1 of their league. Any non-NPL team can also earn D1 status making this approach a real meritocracy.
Why won't NYCSL change? Eastern FC should have been booted years ago and Everton with more advanced leagues does not put their top players in NPL.
The thing is NYCSL has the US Club Premier platform already and could implement the same thing as EDP. I believe their hardened stance on this has led to the massive growth of EDP where NYCSL is really just taking rec teams from Westchester and LIJSL.
Maybe it's only about the money there but I would not be surprised if a few NJ based clubs bolt soon. I see them at all the Maps tournaments and it's only a matter of time before that start to ask why are they playing in a league with such low ranked teams?
Any thoughts or opinions?
PS I am not affiliated with either league, just a long time soccer parent that has seen this game change so much locally while my kids played.
